VIN looks good to me, just not from a RR.

1969 E383HP installed in a car built at Newark DE.

So was it normal for LA to omit the first six characters of the VIN? My St. Louis built Road Runner has the complete VIN on the block.

The only 1969 models to get full VINs were cars built from Aug 68 to aprox Dec 68 / Jan 69 . In other words Full VINs on engines/trans was only done for the first half of the production year . The only time full Vins ever appeared in the 68-74 time frame .

Yes, but it is really just the first five characters. For example, for my 70 Cuda the block, trans, and body stamps are all missing the BS23N portion of the VIN.

Can you get a more straight on photo?

This car looks like it is a low vin number that I think would have been built before Dec? twocents

I'll have to look again but I believe the date code on the side of the block is 11 * 16 * 68

Pic is tagged as 9F, possible mis-stamp?

Re: E383 HP Block - w/o VIN ??? - 11/09/17 08:26 PM

LA plant is known to have very poorly stamped VINs
9F140705 from Newark would've been October '68 & a full VIN stamp engine
Newark built C-bodies & there are NO 383HP C-bodies

9E140705 was a 219 (Wed. 2/19/69) scheduled RR & the "E 383HP" engine assembly date (Mon. 2/3/69) fits well for this car

Possible clue? From the same person I purchased this block from I also bought this 69 Road Runner hood in Bahama Yellow. Perhaps from the same car? ->

Re: E383 HP Block - w/o VIN ??? - 11/09/17 08:48 PM

by 1969 the only cars that used the bosses on the driver's side front of a 383 block were A-bodies (many '68-'69 non-A-body blocks have these, drilled & tapped)

Dan, earlier in the thread, before the hood was mentioned, you deduced from a partial VIN the car "is/was a Y39 "99" paint code"

I'm curious what your process was for coming to this conclusion?

Thanks!

the 2,000+ special order paint (Bahama yellow, rallye green, Omaha orange, corporate blue) '69 Road Runners from LA were assigned VINs in batches

RM23H9E140704 is a restored "Omaha orange" Road Runner

Looks to be a badly stamped "E" to me, the bottom of the "F" look like if starts to bend to the right. scope

Dan,

Wasn't the "C-Body" 383 4-BBL, NOT technically an HP engine; but a 383 4BBL engines with HP manifolds, dual snorkel and dual exhaust? 330 HP vs. 335 HP.

In the C-Body world, the 383 4BBL with the HP manifolds, dual snorkel air cleaner and dual exhaust from the factory is our "383 HP" engine package. The alt, was "lo-po" 383 2bbl 290 horse. Correct?

Everything but the cam was the same on the 383 4BBL 330 horse vs. the 383 HP 4bbl 335 horse,....correct? Just 5 HP difference.

Or wrong-O- ?

I know you addressed Dan but...

In the C body world, the C body 330 horse is incorrectly called the HP. From 68-70, there is a specific variant of the 383-4 bbl used in A, B and E (1970) cars that contains different parts and is considered the HP version. There is no 335 horse HP C body assembly.

There is no such thing as HP manifolds. There are 2-bbl and 4-bbl manifolds.

The 383-2, 383-4 330 horse and 440-4 350 horse all used the same cam. The 335 horse and 440-375 horse used the same cam and associated valve train.
