Details - Cuda Rear Harness Routing

Details - Cuda Rear Harness Routing - 10/01/17 04:48 PM

So digging through teardown pics I found the image attached and it appeared to me the cable should have been routed through the boxed cutout. So I decide to check the engineering drawing and this portion isn't really addressed in the primary view. Also note you see the oval hole addressed that leads into the cab, this hole would be forward of the cutout in the attached photo.

I also notice that the additional view labeled "Model 27" clearly shows the routing in this area, and it appears identical to the way my car was built. Since mine is not a convertible the supplemental view should not apply.

I suspect the guy building my car didn't have the clarity he needed, and either lacking a little common sense or jumping to conclusion with the supplemental drawing view, decided to route the cable like a convertible.

I have little doubt that my car had the harness routed incorrectly to what the engineering intent was but I'm curious if others have supporting teardown photo's (original teardown photos only please) showing the rear cable routing in this area. Were they all like this or am I a man on an island?

I'm a 1970 mid March SPD AAR in the event we get that detailed.

Passing through the cutout is normal & puts it in line with the welded on wire looms at the trunk side gutter.

I’ve got two unrestored AAR’s so I can look after lunch.

Barry - completely agree on what the believed intent should be, but if all or many were done this way, I hate changing history, however if I have the one example of the new guy muffing it up I may be more inclined to change it to agree with the engineering intent.

Fastmark - Appreciate you looking and posting results, please post the rough SPD (early, mid, late and month) for reference.

Thanks Guys!

No two cars were built the same exact way in every detail. :-)

Any true restoration would include any 'mistakes' if the car was built that way.

Oh boy do I have some disagreements coming when I finally finish this car. As a general rule I have kept this sort of found difference, particularly when I have great documentation.
This one I struggle with as it leaves the wire harness riding the sharp edge of the sheetmetal, and while I doubt any real negative effects would come from it, its certainly not a good idea.

Just checked my unrestored AAR that I’ve had since 76. SPD of 409. It does not go through the hole. Looks just like yours. I forgot the check my other car. It’s at the shop and I’ve got skunk problems there. Kind of preoccupied.

Appreciate you looking and find the results particularly interesting. Will love hearing what the other shows as well

While I’m at it, I just realized I have no photo of the RH side routing for the antenna cable. Is this through the cutout or around the bracket like the drivers side?

Looks like the engineering drawing makes the same oversight and only shows the oval cutout entering the cab

Anyone else with original pics or a survivor, either side, please jump in.

My green AAR is the same as my orange car. Both cars have the A01 light package with a trunk light if that may make a difference. I have trouble posting pics on this site but I can email you some and you can post them if you like. I don’t remember the SPD of my green car but it is built earlier. I think March. It also is an unrestored car that I purchased in 78. Both of the antenna cables go through the square hole. Both cars are the same. The grommet that is unused but still on the cable is in a different spot. Pm me your email and I’ll send you some pics.

Thanks for the information Fastmark, and the photos (attached with your blessing)
First pic is of driver side wire harness, second is of passenger side antenna cable routing.
Based on your findings and a few friends I’ve asked with original cars or pics, this installation seems to be the most common, at least for AARs.
Surprising to me the factory seemed to use the cutout on the passenger side and not the drivers side.

**If I ever find out why the image loads sideways sometimes and not others I will correct this *
UPDATE - FIXED, thread below tells how
