69 Superbee Hemi Air Cleaner (air grabber)??

69 Superbee Hemi Air Cleaner (air grabber)?? - 08/07/17 04:09 PM

I was looking at the 69 hemi superbee that sold on Mecum this last weekend. It seems to have a 70 style with 70 valve covers.

Was there a transition period and did the late 69 hemi cars come with a 70 air cleaner set up?

Agree.

The valve covers are 69 and older.

The air cleaner is a 69-71 style without air dam.

Around here , we call the N96 option on a Dodge a "Ramcharger " instead of an air grabber .

Just looked at the car pics. Those are not 70-71 Valve covers, those are the 66-69 style.

These are 70-71's:

I thought the 69 N96 hemi air cleaner base vent tube went to the Driver side and the 70 and up went to the Passenger side. This is to passenger side. I thought the large breather cap was on the driver side and the small on passenger side like the Non N96 cars. Or is there a difference between the two (Non and N96 cars)?

I miss stated about the valve covers being 70s, got confused with the caps on different sides.

69 Hemi GTX and 69 Hemi Road Runner. This is how they rolled off the line.

So N96 cars different, thank you. DO you happen to have a close up of the GTX Power Steering hose at both ends? Part # off metal band?

This is from the nick's garage website on air cleaners. UPDATE: I've been informed that the air cleaner shown below is for 1970 B-body only. 1969 has the breather tube on the driver's side. 1971 dropped the choke pre-heater hose fitting (small fitting behind rear carburetor) although some cars may have gotten units with the fitting.

Maybe website is wrong.

The website is absolutely wrong. Besides, the tube they are referring to will pivot to either side. The pictures I posted are correct for 1969.

Re: 69 Superbee Hemi Air Cleaner (air grabber)?? - 08/10/17 04:23 AM

Wrong! All 69 air grabber and ram chargers whether they were 383,440, or hemi had breather on the driver side.

Re: 69 Superbee Hemi Air Cleaner (air grabber)?? - 08/10/17 03:27 PM

Ok, So now we have a disagreement, and some high end cars would have wrong air cleaner on them.

I do know the tube does not pivot unless the assembly became broke/loose. I also know that folks have modified the base to change the orientation when as an example a 69 383 Air Grabber base is used on a 70 Air grabber (for the larger oval air cleaner).

So for the hemi it does seem that we only have one base being sold as a reproduction, but that would not be the first time the industry decided to standardize a reproduction part to avoid multiple variations.

So back to the superbee... Does anyone have original pictures of 69 hemi airgrabber or ramcharger with the driver side breather?

The Super Bee you are referring to, had the engine compartment restored by Frank Badalson, probably the most knowledgeable guy out there on 69 Hemi cars.

I was second owner of a well known 69 Hemi Bee and the oil breather was on the passenger side. However, if we are nitpicking the 69 engine compartment, I have never had a 1969 B-Body car where the heater hoses had a metal strap around them like in the photos of the Hemi Bee link and as shown in the engine compartments above? I was the original owner of a 69 383 Runner, second owner of a 9100 mile A12 in 1972 and a 41,000 mile 69 Hemi Bee in the late 80's. The heater hoses were always just loose and held in place by the bracket on the inner fender and one on the alternator. I do not believe the tie straps are correct? Does anyone have a factory photo that shows straps on a 69? Here's a photo from an untouched 5600 mile A12 Bee with original hoses.

You couldn't! Mine came from the 1st owner with the PVC on the drivers side, with original hoses.

Hello all, Frank Badalson here. To clear things up on this Y2 hemi Superbee belonging to Alex Futter.......I had nothing to do with assembly.....they never asked me for advice.....nothing. I only did the engine....thats it. As to aluminum straps on these heater hoses for this application.....It is my research that shows they were NEVER used....I would never have done that and it is unnecessary. Best regards to all Frank

I know how you feel Frank! A long time ago, in a conversation with you and Roger, Dick K told you guys that I said the hood latch and hood spring on his 68 Hemi GTX should be painted body color and I never said such thing. I know you guys knew that I am particularly fussy about original finishes and never tried to straighten it out...but obviously, I still think about it. It kind of makes you feel violated! puke

Re: 69 Superbee Hemi Air Cleaner (air grabber)?? - 08/12/17 03:29 PM

This question was not about the straps, but about the air cleaner. So is there two styles of original Hemi oval air cleaners for N96 cars. One with breather tube to left and one to right based on year like the 383/440 cars. Or just one orientation to the passenger side. Seem that more then one had a car with it on driver side like the chrome round air cleaner cars? Can we see pictures?

Re: 69 Superbee Hemi Air Cleaner (air grabber)?? - 08/12/17 04:12 PM

All the hemi oval air cleaner bases have the breather port on the pass side. There is no "69" left side breather port version. The other variation would be having a shield in front for 70 Charger, Challenger, and Superbird applications. I have also seen a 1971 Hemi N96 base that did not have the 1/4 nipple in back for the choke pre-heat tube. The rarest of all would be one with the shield and w/o the choke tube, one application only 1971 Challenger non-shaker.

There are a lot of 69 Hemi B-bodies with the breather nipple on the driver side for that to be true. At one time I owned one>

Re: 69 Superbee Hemi Air Cleaner (air grabber)?? - 11/18/17 03:58 PM

I pulled this one back up because of the heater hose strap comments. Interesting enough, if you look at the 1966 Dodge Hemi Service supplement, there is a picture depicting how the heater hose should be routed and clearly includes hose straps. It is in group 0 page 2.

I have seen one owner 68 Hemi Chargers with those straps. Of course that might not mean anything, and Hemi cars where not A/C correct?
