Bottom of car Paint.. - 05/03/17 04:01 PM

On a 71 Charger, does anyone know what the factory painted the underneath of the car with and the color? Was it just a primer or was there a specific epoxy? I know in certain areas there was undercoating applied, but what was applied to the raw sheet metal before that?
Thx, Wolf.

They were dipped in primer. Resto Rick sells the paint you want to get the factory look, then body color oversprayed on to the dip primer colored paint. I like to use epoxy then resto rick primer look paint on top of that.

The primer bath color can be found behind your door panels and about half way up the firewall on the interior side.

My car (70 Dart) had a medium charcoal grey color dip line, and not the lighter gray that I see in car magazines and internet photos. Maybe it's the camera flash that makes the grey look lighter I don't know. Maybe each plant had a slightly different mixture of whatever they used and it changed as they replenished it over time?

I have no idea how close this is to a factory look, but this is what I did after reading about what the underside of a factory fresh car looked like.

My body guy, then sprayed a very low gloss clear over the primer on the underside to help seal it.

That looks ideal as far as the body color overspray goes. Nice job!

I played around with black and light grey epoxy primer until I found a shade that worked, and then had single stage paint mixed up that was flattened out so it looked like charcoal grey primer.

Looking good!

Hope to see it in person at a spring fling
