Vinyl inserts in side mouldings - 04/16/17 03:54 PM

Hi Guys,
So I finally got my blue cars side mouldings back, thanks Chuck!! But now I need to clean the b3 blue vinyl that I need to glue back to them. I tried a little spray cleaner and lacquer thinner but neither work. Anybody out there have someting that works on these so I can get them on my car again??

Thanks,

If it's only the backsides you need to clean for adhesion, then I'd use acetone, it'll strip any greases/silicone/etc, do a test area first for any adverse reactions, esp if the molding inserts are dyed

Unfortunately, the front side is stained and the backside is clean! Any ideas for that?

They will probably need to be spray dyed with matching color.

Maybe an SEM product typically used on plastic or vinyl interior parts will work. Maybe worth investigating.

I kind of figured I would have to go the paint/dye way but would have liked to clean mine if I could before I glued them down. Thanks guys for the input and hopefully somebody chimes in before painting with the magic method to get these things clean!!

Thanks,

I wonder if a "magic eraser" would clean them up without hurting the vinyl? Might be worth a try on the back side to see if it affects the vinyl.

those Mr. Clean erasers make some impressive claims, but i have never tried them. in fact, i never gave them a thought about using them on automotive stains. it might be worth a try, as they are not expensive.

My bathroom shower floor was looking pretty grungy. I tried cleaning it with some bathroom cleaner but it didn't touch it.(did absolutely nothing) My wife said to use the magic eraser. I was skeptical but gave it a shot. shock shock shock WOW!!! It cleaned it instantly. No hard scrubbing, no special cleaner...just a little water and light pressure. I couldn't believe it. I assumed it would be abrasive but it doesn't feel gritty at all. I would definitely try it on some automotive parts. up

And now that I finally got them painted the correct B3 color, the damn things shrunk! They are about 1" too short now and I can't get them stretched back. Maybe if I get them warmed up they will stretch? But by the time I get them glued and stuck down, will they shrink back? Any body out there know where to find that type of vinyl moulding? It is 5/16" by about 3/16" tall.

Thanks,
Bob
