Sheet metal you would like to see reproduced?

Sheet metal you would like to see reproduced? - 02/18/17 04:53 PM

There are certain cars and trucks that are difficult to find sheet metal for. Let's hear what you would like to see reproduced. Maybe one of the companies that stamps panels will step up and start making them!

I'll start:

1970 Dodge Coronet quarter panels
1967-69 Barracuda front fenders.
1972-93 Dodge truck one piece floors
1972-80 Dodge truck roof skins- both inner and outer
1970 Dodge Charger front fenders

Here is my logic for my choices.
The 70 Super Bees all need quarters just like any 47 year old Mopar. AMD makes trunk floors, trunk extensions, outer wheel houses, rockers, and every other inner panel imaginable to fit them. Every part except the quarter. That leaves a lot of 70 Super Bee's owners waiting, and not buying all the other panels too, because that one key part isn't available. The thing is, 90% of the tooling for the 68,69 Coronet quarters is the same as the 70, so it's not like starting from scratch tooling up.

The 67-69 Barracuda fenders are nearly impossible to find in good shape. Other than the marker light on a 69, and some minor differences in headlight bucket etc, all 3 years are virtually the same panel. A much needed part, and these cars are really getting desirable.

The Dodge truck floor could be made in the small hump version and fit 72-83 2wd trucks and the owner could cut out the hole for the hump on a 4 speed or 4wd model like Chrysler did at the factory. It would allow owners of Lil Red Express trucks, Warlocks, Macho 4x4's and virtually every other 72-93 Dodge truck fix their cab properly.

The roof skin is needed because many of these trucks have had crunched roofs from abuse, sunroofs cut in, and they sometimes rust out at the front above the windshield. The inner rusts above the visors, and also have the sunroof holes sometimes. Both panels are simple stampings.

And 70 Charger fenders. I don't have to explain.
Plus they would allow people who want to restore or clone a Daytona.

Alright, what do you want to see, and why

73-74 satellite roadrunner quarter panels... last I checked, amd only makes the rear lower section.

Re: Sheet metal you would like to see reproduced? - 02/18/17 07:32 PM

A lot of the mfg's like AMD would love to make these items available, AMD's CEO Mark H. is a Mopar owner and enthusiast, so he knows the need, unfortunately he needs to see 2 things, either a huge Email/write in campaign where the committed number of potential buyers is so high that it's worth the investment, or a "customer/vendor" willing to bank roll the investment in the tooling, a die set up for a set of fenders can be as low as $250K up to $400K+ depending on the complexity, then you need someone to pony up a set of NOS/excellent used fender/qtrs/etc to model off of, a lot of time and $$$$ goes into even the smallest part(s) to bring them to market

I agree. I had no idea how difficult it was to find a nice one until I was screwing my '69 together. I found one on the West coast and shipped it all the way to Virginia.

I couldn't find any takers for a set of decent 69 Coronet fenders that I had. Ended up going scrap.

Now I would do anything for a new passenger 70 Charger fender to go with my NOS drivers I've been hanging on to.

These threads always start with a request for 70 Coronet quarters.

We even had a thread dedicated to 70 Coronet quarters.

In 4 years we ended up with 20 people, if that, that committed to buying a set.

agreed, IMHO if one really needs 70 Coronet qtrs, they can be found NOS or clean cut-offs, or rework a set of AMD 68/69 Coronet qtrs

Lower quarter rear patch panels for 64-65 Plymouth. I know they make the whole quarter but why pay a thousand bucks to get the lower piece? Besides I've yet to see any replacement part that's as good as original (100-200 ton presses make a difference) but better than nothing I guess.

And I am living proof. My 70 Bee sits and waits while I do other cars simply because why would I buy $5000 worth of floors and inner panels, if the most important panel is not available. That's why you see so many 70 Super Bee project cars. They are desirable cars and people want to restore them, but everyone knows that quarters are the missing link, so they sit.

From the current thread in Moparts general, get a trailer and head down to Texas, everything's for sale, pony up and pick up a whole car for nice rust free Texas qtrs, who knows? might find a nice candidate for a donor body instead of cutting it up for qtrs? your project could be further ahead/completed?...there's at least 4 to choose from

NUMBERS!
Look at the production numbers!
WK21 - 58
WL21 - 2798
WM21 - 3966
WH21 - 1236
WM23 - 8347
WS23 - 2319
Total - 18,798

RL21 - 4717
RM21 - 15714
RM23 - 23944
S-Birds - 1935
RP23 - 8749
RS23 - 7748
Total - 62,807

That's almost 4X the number of Coronets! That's a bigger demand.

I've seen NOS 70 Coronet quarters for sale at Carlisle. There is a reason NOS 70 Coronet stuff is easier to find than 70 RR / GTX parts.

Making 70 Coronet quarter panels means selling $$$$ worth of other panels like floors and inners etc. No quarters= no sale of other panels.
Build them, and they will sell

Sure they would sell but not enough to make money!

Lets say the tooling costs $250,000 (that's low)
Lets say I make $1000 on a pair or quarters (that's high)

That means I have to sell 250 sets before I make a dime. Are there over 250 Superbees and Coronets out there that need quarters? Probably. Are there that many people out there ready to fork out the cash? NO - otherwise they would do it.

I'm not the bad guy here as I know two V code 70 Bees. I'm just a realist.

Get up off your you know what and invest

1971 Charger R/T bulge hoods. Those can be used to fit til 1974, and a separate press can be used to make the insert hole for ramcharger fresh air for and louvered insert, or no hood hole for 1972-1974 models. If AMD were to calculate how many of the chargers were made from 1971-1974, it would probably be the highest b-body production body make at the time.

Demon, you need to look in the mirror. This "Armchair Expert" HAS invested into and made reproduction parts. I know how much it costs and how easy it is to lose money on reproducing something for a TINY market. Have you walked a mile in those shoes? Until you have you might want to slow your roll on the abusive comments towards others.

Scott,

Stop it.

This is a "lamp rubbing" party. Any minute now the AMD Genie is going to pop on here and grant every posters wish.

Don't try bring up Economics, sound Business Practices or Economics of scale. That's "crazy talk".

Also don't ask anybody here to actually go do any work to find parts or pay fair market value. That's more "crazy talk"

Well ya never know, the NOS stock probably rotted to a layer of rust sitting on the dealers shelves, just like the cars rotted as soon as they left the assy line...

If they made a repo buldge hood (amd I won't buy from any one else) for a r/t. Especially if air grabber. I'd deff think very hard about buying one and adding to the 71 reg charger we have now

Trunk lids for 3rd Gen chargers. As most have rust

Full quarter and front fenders for 73-74 satellite/road runners
Lower 1/4s for 73-74 chargers

Actually there's some stuff out there, you really have to look, the early Sweptline stuff is the hardest to find, but the 72 and up stuff is slowly coming out, LMC recently released some goodies, depending on the years you might be interested in?

Wow . . . so many comments, yet not ONE, about C Bodies !!! . . . yes, there is big following (pun intended) for the full size mopars !!! But if you need sheet metal, you are left looking for best of the worst out there . . . But the C body group, is most possibly the "thrift-iest" of the mopar crowd !!!

I have had C body cars for years, well before my A body, and now B body . . . was AMAZED at how much was available for my 70 Sport Satellite when I decided to go ahead with that car. Especially coming from my C body experience . . .

As all have said, it comes down to the economics . . . good luck with your projects !!

Back in 1986, before ANYTHING was being made for any type of Mopars...I had a '69 300 convertible, michigan car, one of only 1,920 built. The rear quarters were completely rotted out.. inners and outers, both sides. I got lucky when doing research on Arizona junkyards(remember no internet in 1986!) when I came across a place called, "Mr. Good Parts" outside Phoenix I believe? (anyone remember them?) Anyway, he had a 2 door hardtop 300 that he cut the whole 1/4's w/trunk extentions, off the donor, and shipped them to my bodyshop guy. People trying to restore cars like mine (C body's) are still having to resort to this...Yes I know these type of cars aren't as
desirable as a Road Runner or Challenger/Cuda, but I would have thought in the thirty years since I restored that 300, there would be more from the aftermarket by now...I was wrong, oh well, I still like big C bodies just as much as an A/B/E body. twocents

67-69 Barracuda fenders have a lot of production and they are specialty 2-door only cars. So there aren't used donor 4-door fenders feeding the used supply.

1967... 62,534
1968... 46,018
1969... 31,987

That's a little over 140,000 Barracudas. ALL two door models.

Earlier comment in this thread referred to a large write-in campaign to help AMD (Goodmark, etc.) rationalize the need for investment in whatever part is yet needed or wanted.
I get that, but there was never a large write in campaign to rationalize the start-up of AMD and the creation of what they currently offer. So, why did they chose what they did? They did the analysis themselves, or wanted what someone wanted.
Frankly, some of the items they offer seem peculiar to me as original items can be found, and I live in the rust belt!!

It seems to me, that once a run of even more popular items has been made and sold, they may not re-run what they offered in the past.
Not sure what their minimum-buy is from the factory, but if they had a hard time selling off the last 50, why would you buy another 500? That doesn't make business sense.
Time to start hording aftermarket parts!!
