Hemi Auto Trans Dipstick & Tube

Hemi Auto Trans Dipstick & Tube - 10/16/16 04:56 AM

I've been looking for a 1969 original transmission dipstick and tube for a 426 Hemi automatic transmission. Everything I have been seeing is a one piece style dipstick. Including what are supposed to be Mopar original pieces. I seem to remember a Hemi dipstick being 2 pieces riveted together. Am I correct on this? Anyone have any pictures? I'm interested in original parts only no reproduction parts.

Hi Dave... The two over the counter NOS Hemi Trans "indicators" that I bought were the riveted together "2 Piece" configuration, as was the dipstick that was in my triple black 1968 Hemi Charger R/T... Although, by that time the car was 10 years old, so someone could have changed it...

You are correct. It's riveted together

i try to learn something every day i'm still above ground this subject intrigues me, as i have never heard this, nor thought it might be something other than a one piece item. could anyone please post a pic or two of this ? i will never be able to own a legitimate hemi car, but would like to know more about this item. why was it rivited together in the first place ? was the length that much different caused by the routing ?

Because of the size of the head the indicator tube had to be shorter. This results in the indicator also needing to be shorter.

Would you be kind enough to post some measurements?

Any pictures of how the tube mounts to the engine & trans and clears the heat tubes?
Do they use the bell housing bolt like others?

18 1/2" overall. 16" from the end to the rubber grommet stop.

well ratroaster, you just taught an old dog something new ! [and they say in my case, it's impossible !] i also see, if my eyes are focusing correctly, the stick is also re-positioned to not be in a straight line at the splice. can i guess that is to allow the stick a somewhat easier insertion in the tube due to being a shorter version ? thanks for sharing the pics of this ! bow now if i can just remember this tidbit for future discussion.

My dipstick is almost straight, not as anglled as the pictured one. It goes in fully one direction, flip it over and it stops short.

So they took a big block dipstick and shortened and modified it to fit the Hemi application? Looks like 2 cuts were made judging by the slightly different widths of the stick at the joint. Then the center piece was discarded and the remaining 2 riveted together. Seems like a lot of labor intensive tedious work when one the correct length could have been designed and built. Also considering they apparently designed and built a special tube for it.

Probably cheaper to modify them considering the # of Hemi cars built. Design and build from scratch cost big bucks.

Big block, small block use the same dipstick but the tubes come in several different shapes. I agree that, for the small number of Hemi automatics, it was cheaper to shorten rather than make the dipstick from scratch.

The stamped in writing on the stick is different than other Mopar dipsticks. Didn't they build12,000+ hemi cars? About half automatics?
