72 b-body paint questions - 08/31/16 06:56 PM

I have a question on the door paint procedure on some 1972 cars I've seen. My buddy's 72 runner with a SPD of 819 has this procedure and another 72 SSP with a build in Dec. 71 has this white between the weather strip and interior panel. My March build 72 doesn't have that. Plant???? Time of build???
Thanks Ron

are you talking about the UDF (Upper Door Frame) paint?

what's the color combination of the March car? what's the fender tag call for? is it restored? it is often missed work

Not sure if it would be the same or not but my '71 is painted black there. in fact, every 71-72 cars I've never seen them in white

It should be painted to match the interior color Black, White, Blue, Green ,Gold. I think that's all the interior colors for 72. It is coded on the fender tag

The March 72 car I bought from original owner with 21K miles on it in 1977. 100% original and didn't have the white paint there.

RP23 Black exterior, White interior.

The Red door in the picture is RP23 also and the Runner I spoke of would be RM23 so that has no relevance.

I asked in my question is this a plant thing??? Since I don't know the plant of either example I gave knowing the plant of my car would be irrelevant no?

I don't have the tag to any at the moment to look at UDF color.

The first SSP I had without it was a Windsor plant car.

Not all cars got the upper door paint to match the interior. I've had a few that didn't in both 71 and 72. There is a code for it that ST. Louis put on their fender tags. TX9 is black. EW1 is white and was available in several interior colors. 000 is left body color. If your tag has 000 on it the door frame should be body color not interior color.

This same subject was just brought up on FB and I asked the guy to give me his SPD and plant info.

That's good info. Mark. I'll have to find the tag info. from my old car that didn't have the white paint in the door frame.

Another guy chimed in on FB about this subject and he posted up pictures of his 72 SSP with EW1 on his sheet and EW1 on his tag but his doors have TX9 paint on them. His car is an EV2 with White interior built 518 in Windsor plant. That is odd!!!!

Odd but doesn't surprise me.

I think most base line RL cars did not have the upper paint.
RM and RH cars got it when ordered with the Décor interior.
RP and RS car came with it.
Believe Dodge is the same.
That's my take on it. grin
