Painting Leaf Springs?

Painting Leaf Springs? - 05/30/08 11:34 PM

I have a new set of MP leaf springs and they came with a black coating. I plan to sandblast my Dana for painting and wanted to know if I should paint the leaf springs at the same time?

You can paint them, but in order to get a nice quality job you should seperate them and paint each leaf individually.

Don't mean to hyjack this thread but do your leafs say "Made in Mexico" anywhere on them? I heard that some MP springs do and some don't. I am thinking about new springs and would consider MP if I knew they were not made in Mexico (quality issue).

I can't believe it they do say Made in Mexico on them. Has someone reported having issues with these springs? I haven't taken the tags off so I am sure I could send them back.

Mine were made in Mexico and have been on my Cuda for several years now with no issues. I hate the quality of MP parts these days too, but I think the leaf springs are OK.

The one issue is from a previous thread I found last week, and its a major issue to me, is that owners of E bodys were disappointed after installation - claiming their cars sit too low! Even one Charger owner.

I bought a pair for my E Body awhile back, I think they too were made in Mexico, I'll be looking tomorrow for sure, but after reading the thread last week, not sure I want to take the time to find out if ride height in rear will not be the same as original. They're supposed to be XHD - so why in the world are these owners not happy with their new MP springs that have been around for a long time now?

Maybe they'll read your post and come in again to clarify the sitting too low aspect of these 'XHD' springs. I'm considering using a pair of 'Hemi' springs taking up space here instead to replace my originals now after reading that. Makes me mad to think I spent the cash for these new springs if the car will sit lower than original!!!! Then to find 'Made in Mexico' stamped on them!!! Grrrrr.

Let's hear it guys, are the claims from that thread true?

My old springs were definitely shot. I laid them on the floor and measured to the center of the bushing and the new ones are about 1.5" higher than the old.
I would like to hear from others that have purchased and installed these springs as well.

The MP springs I put on my old 72 Challenger were made in Mexico and I wasn't happy wih the ride height.

I have the super stock springs from MP that were made in Mexico. The car originally sat pretty high in the back, having about 1.5 inches between the opening lip of the well to the top of the tire. After 8 years, the wheel lip covers almost an inch of the tire. And thats after relocating the front perch to the lower eye hole. I suspect after this year, I will be replacing them with espo replacements.

I think there's definitely an issue with ALL XHD springs, no matter who sells them. There seems to be more complaints about XHD than any other spring... myself included.

I put 1"+ on my Road Runner and the car sits exactly where it did with the worn out springs, only now the right side sits about an inch lower than the left.

The MP made in mexico springs are junk and saged after 6 months on my charger plus they dont look anything like original springs. Eatom spring is the only company that makes original looking springs with the correct tapered ends and they are un painted steel.

My XHD springs from MP were made in Mexico,..........I removed the leave bands to separate them slightly when I painted them, to get color inbetween the leaves and painted them with a cast blast paint that has the finish of raw steel, I left the black finish on, just painted over it, I thought I might have rust issuses if I removed it? I drive the car rain or shine, no rust issuses, no fatique issuses, in fact I enjoy throwing the car around any chance I get!.....the've been on the car for 3 plus years now.....
