71 GTX - 03/24/16 01:19 AM

Can anyone lead me to production figures for a 71 GTX 440 HP car.
Automatic / Console
3.23 Open rear
color is Gold

Looking at a restoration project for a friend and trying to decide how far to take this project based on dollars and sense.

Thanks

Mike

For your '71 GTX production numbers
go to The Road Runner Nest.
You can find what you need there

Re: 71 GTX - 03/24/16 03:25 PM

Available parts might end up being the deciding factor on that car. I have done several '71 GTXs. I love 'em. But many items unique to them are nearly impossible to find.

Be sure to research the availability of the stuff you need for this project. The '71 RR and GTX are great cars, but there is a real shortage of parts for them.

Good luck.

I don't want to rain on yer parade, but the tab for a coupla' 71 GTX's done to OEM in these parts recently came in at over 6 figures...

Doing one of these was never easy...

As in '$$$'...

To do one in 2016 can get you upside down real quick...

Re: 71 GTX - 03/25/16 02:11 AM

Like any restoration, it pays to start with a very solid car that is very complete. There are allot of parts available now. Though, like any others, some are not cheap.

My 71 GTX was a GY8/GY4. The following owner changed the color FJ6 Green, which was the right move IMO...other than it was ~somewhat~ misrepresented once it went on to retail dealers.

My numbers were for 440-4 and don't include 440-6 and Hemi

@ Diego... Yes. The car was a fairly high optioned. AC/PS/PDB/PW/AMFM-cassette/hood turn signals..numbers matching engine/trans/rear. They just changed the colors was all.

What are the near impossible parts to get for 71 B Bodies?
Posted By: cdp

Re: 71 GTX - 03/25/16 07:41 PM

rust free trunk lid. Seat Foam.. no one reproduces the correct for for 71/72 B-bodies. Correctly restored dash bezels or nice OEM are hard to find. Nothing is impossible, but can be pricey.

OEM hard to find:
Marker lights
inside plastic pillar posts
medallions for door panels

Is your restoration going to be an OEM-Judged, or driver resto.

Some of the stuff mentioned is now being reproduced, but not having OEM markings.

I'm sure glad that i never needed to find anything for the Purple, 71 Hemi GTX, 4 speed car, that i owned for 28 years.

So the 71 SSP seats I have might be worth something grin

Should be the same for GTX...

Look at the grain, and the inserts..

Re: 71 GTX - 03/25/16 09:37 PM

I restored a 71 GTX back in the early 90's. There was almost no reproduction parts back then. I spent a lot of time tracking down NOS parts for it. The car was GB2 Blue with a B5 blue interior. It had two fender tags and two window stickers. I think there were about 22 options in all. I sold the car in 1997 at what would be today called a "give away price" I never saw the car again and I have wondered where it is today...

The only real difference between a 71 SSP and GTX interior is the dash emblem.
71-2 SSP and RR, with the Décor interior, use the same bucket seats including covers as the 71 GTX.

'Glacial Blue' is a rare one in the '71 GTX world...

Only a little over 60 sprayed that color...

Blue interior-less than 300...

Did mine in the early 90's, too...

Very little out there...

And a lot of the re-pop of today I ain't hearing good things about...

The 71 I once owned had the very rare for a GTX, A35 Trailer Towing Package and the L42 Headlamp Time Delay w/Warning Signal options. I just corrected my earlier post. I was looking at the broadcast sheet and the correct paint code is GB2

Re: 71 GTX - 03/26/16 01:00 AM

GTX grill emblem and rocker moildings are probably the hardest things to find.

Re: 71 GTX - 03/26/16 01:25 AM

And the wiper knob.

Re: 71 GTX - 03/26/16 01:32 AM

also some of the options
try finding the parts for strato vent, power windows.. ect

Re: 71 GTX - 03/26/16 01:39 AM

How difficult are tail lite bezels to find nowadays? The tail light lenses are available now although the ones I have seen have the black paint like the base models had. But I haven't seen the bezels in repop. The dash emblems are difficult to find just like the dash panels and knobs. The panel behind the driver's rear wheel and the tank behind it are also hard to find in usable condition.

The list goes on and on.

Yes, it does...

Sold a pair of mint upper door panels, and a strato 'control panel' a coupla' years back...

Tuff, and RimBlow, too...(Cores)...

Decent OEM T-light bezels I hardly ever see...

Along with lenses...

Rocker moldings???

Good luck...

Along with the vapor canister...

The tail light bezels are being made.

As far as the front rubber bumper applique, Gene Gregory was making a fine repro of that, but Gene's pretty much done with the biz, I heard at first he was going to keep the rubber bumper making part of the biz, but Tommy Chyrco has that now, I don't know if he is going to do the 71 B body bumpers, or just stick to the E body line for now?

AirGrabber hood repro stuff is out there, some good, some bad, depends on the vendor and what you need? but at least somethings available

Back light louvers, if you want originals, yeah pony up $3-$4K for a set when they're available, or repros, I heard Gene Gregory sold off his factory mold and the current producer is "re-tooling" and any new sets will be fetching $2K

I still offer my rear window repros for $850 tooled off originals, next year they're going to $950 due to costs, but this year I'll honor the $850 price for those who have already contacted me for a set

Re: 71 GTX - 03/26/16 06:50 PM

I remember looking at a 'used' applique at the Usta'BeMopar Nats in the past...

Gnarly, twisted, and stud-rusted, it was...

Asking price-$750.00

Heard of OEM '71 vacuum switches fer an A/G going for TALL $$$ before they was re-popped...

AND heard of a set of OEM louvers going for $3500.00...

Sight unseen...

Still in the box...

Re: 71 GTX - 03/27/16 01:30 AM

I restored a 71X, M 91 Luggage Rack car in 2001. At that time NO one had a nice luggage rack- luckily found a clean deck lid in a local yard (which proceeded to crush everything a little later in the decade) and used it.
The rocker molding are very tough to find $$$

Re: 71 GTX - 04/07/16 05:36 PM

Lots of post here. LOL

I think im gonna buy the car to help my buddy out. has to go tomorrow. it has some issues but alot of parts are with the car. needs some sheet metal work as any 45 year old car could need. Nothing too drastic. door corners, some rear quarter and trunk is solid along with engine compartment.
Probably will not restore myself as i have plenty of projects so i will lay parts out and post here.

50,000 mile original motor and trans and i assume rear. gotta be a good project for someone. it wont be a 100 point car but will surely make a good solid project.

Found a build sheet in back seat but fender tag disappeared from Place of purchase like 12 years ago. Clean title ready to go

Appreciate all the input.

Wish us luck or maybe someone is interested?

Hmmm. That's disturbing.

How many vendors make fender tags??

I only know of one.

If there is a vendor repopping tags, I'd stay away! All they are doing is opening a can of worms
