1971 BB Dual Snorkel & Valve Cover Questions

1971 BB Dual Snorkel & Valve Cover Questions - 12/23/15 11:38 PM

It is my understanding that the 1971 dual snorkel air cleaner was unique because the breather tube was attached to the driver side snorkel, not attached to the body of the air cleaner on the passenger side.

Assuming that is correct, was the breather also moved to the driver's side, or did the breather remain on the passenger side, and the breather hose run behind the carb to the air cleaner?

Most of the photos I've found online seem to show this configuration, and show the oil filler at the front on the driver's side, the breather at the rear on the driver's side, and the PCV on the rear of the driver's side. Is this correct?

And finally, should the air cleaner be gloss black or wrinkle black in this application? I'm cloning a '71 Satellite 383 police car and would like to get this right.

Thanks for your help.

Though this one here is a single snorkel for 71, the dual is essentially the same.

The valve cover on the Passenger side had the fill cap in front and a 3-prong breather in back.

The Drivers side valve cover came in 2 configurations AFAIK. An early (same as 70), and a later one which had a round bump on it. I have know clue of when the cutoff date was for them. My current 71 GTX has the bump and is in the middle of the run.

On air cleaner paint, I've had 2 71 GTX's and they were not wrinkle paint, just gloss black. I've also seen a few original, low miles cars, and they were gloss black.

This is my old car, and the motor, etc. was never apart when I bought it. It was pretty ratty, but original. Until I sold as an unfinished project and it became green (rather than gold). But it does look good.

Thanks CDP!

I wish there were a way to get high-res photos of the engine compartment of you old car. It does look good.

Thanks for the link Tman. I had somehow missed it, but I have it bookmarked now.
