Restoring an Original Redline Tire

Restoring an Original Redline Tire - 10/10/15 09:00 PM

Picked up the original Redline Firestone tire from my 68 GTS. Overall the tire is in great shape. However, the redline is quite faded. Anyone know of a product or process in getting the stripe red again?

Years ago there was a post on how to restore the raised white letters on an original tire. It involved wet sanding the letters with very fine sand paper. The letters are solid white...not just a white coating over black. The redlines are the same way aren't they? You could wet sand the red to remove the weathered upper layer.

Thanks. I kinda figured that would be part of the process.

Also...

When I bought my reproduction WSW tires, I wasn't happy with the look of the white stripes. They were very rough looking. I contacted the person I bought them from and he forwarded the issue on to Kelsey Tire. This is the response I received. This might be another option to try.

Quote:
The white stripes appear to be bad buffing at the factory. You will almost always see a little bit of roughness in every stripe, red, blue, white or gold. There is a fix for the white stripe if your customer has access to a product called Xtra seal rubber prep. Simply pour on to a clean rag and rub the white strip, the eggs shelling will disappear. You can find this product at any O reilly’s parts store. The black wall does appear to be the (Blue) protectant. Have your customer use an SoS pad with soap, this should clean up the black wall.

One more point, if your customer does use the Xtra seal rubber prep, Do not let it drip on any painted surfaces. Hope this helps. Oh Yeah, if the SoS pad does not work. The Xtra seal rubber prep can be used on the blackwall.

I was also told that if I couldn't find the "Xtra" product, that I could use laquer thinner. Just make sure to wipe it on and off quickly.

This should be a start. Just have to find out what product to use to get the red back on the stripe

I had the same problem with the spare tire in my 69 GTS.What I ended up doing was lightly sandblasting the face of the tire complete and it made it look brand new.I broke down the front bead, fitted cardboard around the edge so it didn't get to the rim.I was very happy with the results. John.

So what paint did you use for the stripe?

Nothing, that's red rubber, blasting it took the dead rubber off.I did the whole face of the tire and it looked like new when I was done.I used a very fine sand at low pressure and it worked great.

Wow. One op suggested using Wesleys tire cleaner. I'll give that a shot first. If that doesn't work then the sand blasting method may be appropriate. Looks like I'll need to find someone with a fairly large cabinet.

Okay, just for sh**ts and giggles I went out to the garage this evening to work on the spare. I shot the redline side with Wesleys and let it sit for 10 minutes. Came back and shot it again. Here are the results.

I went ahead and cleaned the entire tire with Wesleys. Once dried I applied some Mothers protectant.

Taking the tire along with some other parts back up to WA state next month to merry up with the GTS and bring the car home to Mesa.

There's some stuff you can get where they sell RV supplies. Aerospace Protectant. Suppose to work really good on rubber and vinyl.

Its called 303 Aerospace protectant. I tried it and I didn't like it that much. I used it on my Ram's tonneau cover and when it rained, it left streaks down the sides of the bed. Had a heck of a time getting it off of the paint too.

I am surprised you had any issues with 303. I find this stuff to be excellent. I have a trailer (phenomenal on gaskets and seals) and also use it on my vehicles. I spray it on and it gets on painted and glass surfaces, never any problems. I too use it on my tonneau and find it does not collect dirt like other products. Are you sure it wasnt leftover dirt on the tonneau that was streaked down?
It isnt glossy, so dont expect that sort of result.

Only negative would be using it on your dash. It does seem to offgas a white residue to the windshield.

I made sure to wash my truck, scrub the tonneau cover with a brush, and dry the truck thoroughly. I then applied the 303 to it. A day later, it rained an I ended up with the streaks down the side of the bed.
