ebody decklid skin - 03/04/15 06:17 AM

My cuda trunk lid is nice, but the lip needs some work. Want to keep as much original sheet metal as possible Does anyone make a skin, I could use to just repair the lip with?

I take it there is no deck lid skins out there.
I hate to let a good original deck lid die

Maybe take the metal off an AMD?

I believe it was Domingo that had a thread on here years ago about restoring a deck lid. They separated the outer skin and under bracing, did major repairs and put it back together. I could not find the thread - perhaps you can ask Domingo.

I just did a 72 cuda with the same issue as you are saying. Lip rust between skin and under body part of deck lid. I entertained using a universal door bottom which is a flat sheet of metal with the lip bent for doing just that where you hammer and dolly it flat like it would be a pinch weld. The small outer edge on the deck lid ment I would either try and weld my seam on that small area or do my 90 degree bend and make my weld on the flat top edge of the deck lid. Needless to say I talked myself out of that REALLY quick. You would either be money ahead getting a new deck lid or finding a rust free one than trying to fix a rusty one. IMO if I was looking at buying one that either had a new or rust free deck lid on it or one that was patched the way I said above. I would rather have one that was not repaired. Thats just my.02 though.

I know of a few that have bought an aftermarket deck lid taken the skin off and did the same with there orginal lid and put the new skin on the old frame. I have only seen the end result and it looked nice. This was a lot of years ago so things might of changed in the aftermarket for lids.

thanks for the tips guys. I was told the trunk lid frame look varied through out the 2 yrs. I have a feb 70, and someone told me that trunk frame has different cut outs than others. I also wanted to be able to say down the road, the car retained most of its original sheet metal (replacing the trunk lid will take a chunk out of that number). I just want to preserve its value, where I can, the trunk lid is perfect except for some of that lip.

I am thinking it may be best to cut the lip off a new trunk lid, and reuse that on my original. Its got to be a crimp fit (right?), so it should pry off along the lip?. Then have my body guy weld it on.

Or take the skin off an AMD and put it on my frame. I'll reach out to domingo too.

Thanks also for the offer on the 71 lid, I think it would not be correct.

One thing is if you are going to play the date code, paint dab, oem game on your car it is going to cost more money.

There were various trunk lids during the years of production. There were changes for the Spoiler, the Wings and maybe the luggage rack. I am not sure exactly how many trunk lids there were over the years including 72-74, but it might be 3 or 4 different lids. The trunk lid you have now can it be leaded to bring it back to an original look. A picture of the lid you are talking about might bring some other answers to your question.
