Originally the brake drums would've had red paint on them if it had 14x5.5" "ROAD" wheels on it when new. 46 = F70-14 Goodyear SPEEDWAY "white stripe"

Familiar with the red paint on the drums but I'm not near the car. I didn't know if the tire size dictated the type of wheels. Thanks for the info.

red brake drums in 1968? i didn`t think it was introduced until late 69? definitely not on my aug 68 built 69 charger with w23 recalls.
anyone got further info of when they started painting red brake drums?

I know my Sept built 69 R/T Charger had red and I have the sheet on it to show W21.

The red painted drums were slopily done with a brush on the front surface only. The lug studs had some paint slopped on the outside of them like in Dans picture. The wheels went on before the paint dried so the original wheels had paint on the flange and drips on the inside of the rim.
These restorers that spray paint the complete drum are doing it incorrectly.

I bought a $100 '68 Charger in '85 (per the b'cast sheet it originally had "ROAD" wheels. it was built March of '68), IIRC there were remnants of red paint on the drums.
Original or "day two"

The 2-19-68 drawing mentions MOTOR WHEEL , wasn't that the recall wheel ? If that's the case then that drawing would be for 69 model year since the recall wheels weren't used on 68's ???

MOTOR WHEEL CORP. (headquartered in Lansing, MI & purchased by Goodyear in the early '70s) built most of the wheels used by Chrysler Corp. (GM & FoMoCo also) during the musclecar era. All "ROAD", "RALLYE", "H" wheels are MOTOR WHEEL CORP.
"Recall Wheels", space saver, and some others were Kelsey-Hayes.

K-H started building a lot of the wheels for Chrysler starting in 1970 from what I've seen. The big-H wheels had build dates anywhere from 1968-1972. All the big-H wheels were built by Motor Wheel. As far as what would be the correct steelies for this 1968 Coronet, they would be 14x5.5" unless the car is a hemi. If it's a hemi & had steelies, they would be 15x6". Both of these are pretty unique because of the unusual "bumps" in-between the lug holes.

Right now I have none - especially the '69 dated ones. Good luck finding any. A good alternative is to go with the 15x6.5" ones that are almost identical to a big-H wheel, then have Resto Rick stamp new date codes & an "H" in each wheel. Then they look like the real McCoy at a fraction of the cost. NOBODY is reproducing these wheels.
