If its the correct distributor for the engine and application, you're going about it the right way. Most parts store distributors these days have one part for all applications. There's no way you can be sure the advance curves are really right. They probably justify this statistically under the theory that most are close to typical, if they care at all.

What year? Points or electronic pickup? Are you looking for numbers matching, just make it work good, or ??

If it needed points and then checked on a machine I probably could have helped you out.

With a 4 speed hi-po package if your dizzy is original or correct replacement it will have a rather different advance curve than a run of the mill generic replacement.

My suggestion is to first check the tag number on the distributor and compare with what is supposed to be on there. A Chrysler/Plymouth/ or Dodge '72 Parts book will have that info. Then check for side to side play in the top shaft as well as overlubrication. If you can feel side play, you know the shaft or bearings need to be checked to see if it is accepatble or out of spec. Bearings can be replacemed (new). Shafts I don't know. Might have to take a good shaft from another dizzy. Same issue if the top 'shaft' and slot plate assy is internally worn - although that could be bushed IMO.

If side play is OK, then test on a machine for advance curve and vacuum curve. Those can be tweaked to bring into spec.
