1970 T-Mast Jack Finish

1970 T-Mast Jack Finish - 01/01/15 07:09 PM

1970 E-Body

I know the color of the mechanism, base and hook are grey (Plasti-kote Federal Gray is suppose to be a good match)

The real question is the t-mast finish, mine appears to be painted silver, silver lacquer would be my guess. Considering the age and condition I'm unable to determine if what I'm seeing is original or if someone dusted it with paint many years ago, though I suspect original untouched. I haven't been able to find much to confirm my findings so looking for input.

Thanks

So the t-masts were simply painted silver?
1401 bright silver is a metallic paint, are you saying this is close to original paint or are you trying to mimic some sort of plating?

The finish on mine was pretty dull but condition and age make it tough to say if it would have ever carried a shine or not. Considering I had no reaction in acid, it's safe to say no zinc coating was present.

Just trying to be sure on this prior to refinishing

You can't really notice the metallic on cast steel.I have the original untouched jack in my Superbird,I just recently did a 69 b-body jack and they are almost identical.

From the low mile T/A, AAR jacks were painted the same.

I've used Mopar Rallye wheel paint with good results.

Funny you should say that, while the finish on mine was pretty beat up it appeared exactly like the outstanding quality photo in Barry's picture (thanks for posting Barry), and I thought it looked a lot like the lacquer rallye wheel paint.

Thanks to all for helping!

Re: 1970 T-Mast Jack Finish - 01/04/15 08:08 PM

After further thought and a debate with a friend, we noticed the paint on the mast was pretty tough stuff, not easily scratched or chipped, didn't blister with aircraft stripper and showed no sign of being affected with a brief dip in acid, though it obviously wore on the edges over time with use. This made us think it may be a high solid zinc based paint, often referred to as cold galvanized. This may explain why it seems to hold up pretty well over the years even when used. There are many brands on the market, some paint brush and some aerosol, most seem to be a silvery grey.

Has anyone tried using this? Results?

I'm planning to give this a try as I think it will hold up better than typical paint

I always thought the mast was plated by the manufacturer, not painted. Is that why the paint remover and acid will not touch the finish on the jack mast?
If it were painted, a couple times using the jack would take any paint right off down to metal, then the jack would rust in the leaky trunk in Seattles 8 month long rainy season, making the jack useless.

Normally zinc plating will be removed when placed in a diluted muriatic acid bath (begins to fizz), mine did not when subjected to the bath. The only thing that seemed to affect it was lacquer thinner, pulling the silver finish but looked gray on the rag.

I agree paint may mimic the finish, but wouldn't hold up the way most jacks seem to, even when I run across them in junk yards. This is why I was thinking heavy zinc solid paint, though I must admit I'm unsure if the zinc is somehow protected from the acid in a paint base.

Heavy zinc paint is often used to protect fencing and farm equipment exposed to the elements, and does it with very good results.

As long as I can find a color that appears to match relatively well, I believe it would be a much more durable finish than the silver paint I was originally planning to apply.

My jack stem is di-chromate('71 Ply B-body)...

Doing well after being re-plated 20 years ago...

If you want longevity, talk to a plater...

If your jack is dichromate its likely a tube jack and not a T-jack. I love plating and would prefer it, but if it isn't correct, I'll stay away.

Ive been following along and would appreciate knowing what you decide to do.

I agree its seemingly something other than simply paint on the mast.
