Tie downs on rear frame rails - 70 E body - 12/08/14 05:22 PM

Can anyone tell me what finish/color the two brackets attached to the rear frame rails are supposed to have on them. I was told they are tie down brackets for rail transport???

Mine were bare metal, rust.

And partly sprayed with Rust preventive from the factory when they did the wheel wells.

I just acquired a '70 Challenger T/A and this question is of interest. I know people have painted them black, but what color (or not), were they supposed to be

Re: Tie downs on rear frame rails - 70 E body - 12/09/14 05:48 PM

Mine do look like they were probably bare metal to start with, and then took an assortment of finishes over the years. Some of which was probably the overspray from the wheel well undercoating at the factory.

I don't know for sure, here is a 74 that I pressure washed before taking it apart. They look rusty to me with no coating.

It looks like my 71 had gold over spray on it?

Let me look, and take pictures of mine (1970 Cuda) when I get home. Mine are off the car and the car is original.

As a teenager working in the family's Chrysler Dealership doing new car prep we would just take them off, they we used for shipping and served no other purpose

How did you refinish those tie downs?

Apparently Chrysler expected some line workers to install these incorrectly so issued this double sided bulletin to dealers in October 1969.

On my old T/A they were natural and then dipped in Cosmoline (sp?)and then installed. No question about it.

Sounds logical...BURN HIM!

Why put them back on the car when they should have been removed at the dealer in the first place?
I doubt there is a code on the tag or broadcast sheet for them

Re: Tie downs on rear frame rails - 70 E body - 12/13/14 03:53 PM

On the car I am working on now (March/April 1970 build) the LH bracket has 'LH' stamped into the area between the bolts.
I wonder if they did that in response to the line worker issue.

That bulletin is funny. Kind of odd that they would go through all the effort to say you may have received a car that has these in the wrong position, and here's a crappy sketch of how they should be installed...but just throw them away. Nevermind, nothing to see here

Yeap, and tell them they are off a "1971 Hemi convertible"...and you can get the rest of the money you need to build your car.

I agree, they should be removed and tossed in the scrap pile. Years ago I was excited to find something so heavy that I could remove easily to make my cars go faster.

Then 25 years later I do my first real restore on a different car and put them back on because they were there when I started the restore. Shoot now I just may go out and remove them the more I think about it.

Kinda funny but on my 71 Maverick Grabber this and the tie downs are still on the car. just goes to show that instructions don't always get followed.

Strange that they where supposed to be removed, yet so many cars had them left on.

As for leaving them on or off, it should be up to the current owner. Mine came with them, but I for one am leaving them off.

Just lazy PDIing at the dealer. The way I look at it, they were on my car when it left the dealer so they should be on it now.

The TSB mentions removing them if they were installed on the wrong sides.

It also states that they served no purpose after delivery, so do what you will.

Re: Tie downs on rear frame rails - 70 E body - 12/15/14 08:58 AM

Some where in all my junk I have a set of the tie down hooks/brackets that the car haulers used to attach the chains to.
They're made to use those brackets to tie the car down for transport.

I got them from a buddy that retired from Cassen Transport (deliver the cars to the dealers).

Some day I'll find then when I start going through all the boxes of junk from my last move 3 years ago.

Wow. Way more info on tie downs than I would ever have expected. That is why this site is so great. I have to wonder now what the car show judges would have to say about a part like this being on or off a car??? Not that I am concerned with car show points, but because I went from wondering what color they should be to thinking that I should just discard them. Thanks again

They aren't supposed to be there after deliver, therefore they shouldn't be on anyone's judging sheet......

Read the TSB again, they were to be removed IF installed on the wrong sides.

Send them to me if they dont have any pits in them . They sell for 50.00 a set .
If they came on your car they should be put back on . 99 percent of them were never taken off .
