1970 Challenger TA; ownership and the details.... - 11/05/14 03:52 PM

Hey gang..
Mr. Charger here is diving into the ranks of E-body ownership, that of a 1970 Challenger T/A... It is a Top Banana non-vinyl ( which I prefer ) 4speed non-console. It is in real good shape and I'm excited about owning my 1st E-Body... After restoring my buddy's '71 v-code Challenger R/T last year, I sort of grew to like it. Soooooo, with that said, is there a thread on the idiosyncrasies of Challenger T/A's? I'm sure there are little things here and there and that's what I'm looking for.... More pictures once it is home ( hopefully in two weeks ). It is funny how things fall into place. Wasn't even looking for a E-body, was going the Charger R/T route after I sold my Daytona clone. Got it from a good friend of mine I've known for decades.. I hope to have it home in about a 1.5 weeks..

it's an older restoration, couple of years. The original block is long gone, but was replaced with a real TA block. Has all the other TA-specific stuff if I recall correctly.

You will love the 4 speed T/A. They handle so much better than the B bodies. Good luck with er

I've been tempted by the go-mango that's been advertised lately

I miss my white 4 speed T/A! Might try to get back into a T/A eventually now that Barry is in the area

There are many "special" things about the T/A to watch for. The big ones are:
* 340 six pak callouts on the correct side? Your's look good
* Proper use of blackout paint on the cowl, radiator support, inner fender bolt on area, rear spoiler, and rear spoiler.
* Nuts (rather then bolts) to hold down fenders

And many more. Barry sells a CD set of photos of the 173 mile T/A which is great for reference purposes (although even that car was modified).

Looks like a great car.
Enjoy

Theres no doubt that some had A COUPLE of nuts rather than bolts but I've seen way to many with bolts that are original, problem is that when it becomes the accepted norm people who find bolts find it easier to change than to fight what the masses believe to be true.

If you have a car and are unsure, change to nuts, but if your sure it's original, stand your ground.

Nice car by the way !

Lots of folks want absolutes when there are none.

Debbie's low mileage T/A had the 340 call outs installed on the wrong sides.

Norm's low mileage T/A had a driver's side Scat Pack Bee installed on the passenger side so that it faces backwards.

The T/A I used for the photo disc had three fender studs on one side & four on the other.

Four AARs with the rear window louver package that was supposed to include dual mirrors are known to have been built with (and coded for) only one mirror.

If your car has not been apart before, do not doubt what it tells you.

For me, guess I'm pretty lucky to have the ones I do to represent the B and E..

Thanks guys...

Needless to say, I've been doing my fair share of picture viewing on TA's and have seen a couple with the mouldings.. Nice to know I don't need to worry about those pesky things...

I think you need T/A hood springs, really nice car . Long time ago I had a T/A its long gone parted out, trunk lid had factory cut outs for the spoiler, mine had dual mirrors and no louvers,

AlaskaT/A, how do the 340 call outs get installed wrong any pics?

Re: 1970 Challenger TA; ownership and the details.... - 11/07/14 03:14 PM

No wheel lip moldings on 1970 Challengers with 340s from the factory, T/As included.

The 340 SIXPAK fender decals are side specific, on Debbie's car they were both installed on the opposite sides.

But there is a correct intention or standard and if you are going to restore a car, take it from original to non-original, then you should fix a mistake, even if it is factory (IMHO of course).

As for the callouts, Chrysler clearly stated that the last digit of the part number dictated the correct side that the part should be applied to. I can't remember which but let's say odd number for driver's and even for passenger. It states this right in the parts book. I have an original set of 340 6 pak callouts with the part numbers printed on the back which corresponds to the accepted standard of application (slanting forward). Not to mention, it just looks wrong when they are slanting backwards.

AFAIK odd part numbers were for the left (driver) side and even numbers are for the right side.

Random web pic of an all original T/A no stripe under the spoiler on the trunk lid, I have seen it that way several times at car shows I have a T/A trunk lid from on original T/A and the spoiler has a stripe under it. web page

You're going to love having a Trans Am car!
I've had 4, two of each and almost fainted when I saw your post as I told Barry I've been looking for my old FY1 Mr Norms T/A. I still have the all the dealer paperwork for it too, but my old one was a converted auto to 4spd car. I don't think the E bodies ride as nice as a B body tho.
It's really cool when you're driving and you look out over the big scoop!
Congrats.
