Swapman vs. 1970A13 vs. Mopar Action. Who's right? - 10/18/14 07:38 PM

We need your help.

Was talking to my friend 1970A13 yesterday and we were discussing the new Feb. 2015 Mopar Action Hemi Superbird article.

On the rear of the front fender, there is a black phosphate bolt that secures the inner splash shield.

We both agree that the bolt is black phosphate but we disagree on the "brush applied" blackout on the fender.

I have seen several so called survivors and I believe that this tab had black paint on it. But I did not take some pics, just have my memory to go on.

1970A13 is not as sure and says he will do some more checking. He is very knowledgeable on B-Bodys and Mopars in general. He was very helpful when I restored my Bird. He also owns a B5 Bird which is really cool. He saved me from making more than a few mistakes.

So I wouldn't bet the farm that my memory is correct.

So, what say you, the Mopar Masses.

I believe it was brush applied.

Scott thinks it was left body color.

What say you?

1970 Plymouth b-body - I also believe it was brush applied.
What does the Mopar Action article claim, details?

Can you assume a Superbird fender would get the same treatment as regular B-bodies?

FWIW, A-bodies have that same idea fender tab. I've seen many survivors black. Seem sprayed on those?

This is NOT a B-body fender. It's a 68 Dart fender.

Here's an original owner 33K mile '69 Road Runner on eBay.
Some 1/4 panel & trunk paint work but original otherwise.

One side looks like it does. Other does not.

What is that mark on the bottom of each rear fender lip? rocker seam blackout?

Of course we are not sure those fenders have not been touched up/painted. And the pictures are not high detailed or large. And no outside personal inspection.

On page 17 there is a pic. The text reads:

The famous "black bolt" at he rear of the fender is found on survivor Birds and shown on Jim Bodanis' unrestored 6-pack bird in our previous article on his car. The bolt is black phosphate coated. Behind it is brushed black paint and beyond that is undercoating supplied by Frank Badalson and duplicates the original Chrysler process.

I personally believe this is correct, based on my inspection of some of the few "survivor paint Birds that are left.

But was it a Lynch Road thing or Creative Industries.

And if it was per Chrysler specs, did they do this also at St Louis?

I think Doug S. of the Winged Warriors will have the definitive answer.

Looks like autoxcuda has some proof, concesses says the same, just seems like an unnecessary step. i will have to look at more true survivors, thats getting harder to do!

Scott, I am starting to think that WE are the only "survivors" left.

And I have many replacement parts all ready.

My 1970 Coronet 4-door from the St. Louis plant has painted tabs also.
