the one I use or know of to come standard is NOT a fuel filter, no filter element inside that I'm aware of on a '69 440

The vapor separator is not a fuel filter.

Yes it is a filter, I use them as filters on both my cars.

I don't remember seeing a filter anywhere else on a 440 6 pack motor. I do remember seeing filters on a hemi, not sure about a hemi with a fuel pump mounted vapor separator?

Good question...

Its the only filter on my car. Wish there was room for another without cutting a line.

I snuck one in between the metal fuel line from the tank and fuel pump. Not that my car is perfect "OE" correct, but I am going for a stock appearance. It's hard to see underneath the engine.

That will cause vapor lock on hot days. You should not have a filter before the fuel pump. Strainer yes, filter no.

Well, if it does, I'll know the culprit!!

so are ALL vapor separators fuel filters, I didn't think a MESH screen would filter fuel other than large chunks

Oh and BTW which model, engine and year are we talking about anyway?

That's my point, I cant see the VS doing much to clean the fuel.
I was wondering if a filter before the pump hidden was a good idea - sounds like its not due to Vapor Lock potential.

A 'vapor separator' is not a 'fuel filter'...

I run the proper 'filter' in-line on a '71 B-body...

No 'Vapor' issues...

If memory serves me, 70, and 71 the VS was a 440/ Hemi thing, and did not get a separate filter. The service manual shows whats what, and which engine gets what.

The service manual for 1970 Challenger shows a breakdown of the separator and they do call the screen a filter screen inside the vapor separator. And... 440's and Hemi's did get just a vapor separator. No inline filter from the factory other than the vapor separator's filtering capabilities.

Yes, the separator was designed to be a fuel filter also. However some of the repros had wrong size or no orifices. Does anyone know if they have the correct filter screen?

Here is the complete info from the '70 FSM in case anyone wants to read the explanation/description. It also says how to check for a plugged filter screen.

Mine has those too. They are the filters. Don't the Carter carbs have something similar in the carb inlet?

There are some bogus repro separators out there. I got one and could not figure out why the car would not start. Found that there was no orifice restriction in the return line and the fuel was going straight back to the tank and none going to the carbs
I cut it open to look inside. Surprise!! It was simply 3 tubes stuck into the can and there was no filter screen at all.

This is also a repro, but is correctly manufactured. Note markings on the can. The bogus one had no markings.

other end.
The return line was not orificed correctly. I soldered it closed and drilled a 0.040" hole- somewhat smaller than the factory size of approx. 0.060"

I see it IS a filter....just look at all of the metal shavings it captured

I got mine from Bill Allphin at the time. I suspect Bill Rolik will have the correct ones.

Re: Is my vapor separator my fuel filter ? - 03/26/14 08:05 PM

as far as being a filter, i ran just the vapor separator for years. i had the tops of the carbs off many times playing with jetting, and never once did i see any contamination in the bowls.

that doesn't mean there wasn't any, but i would assume if it wasn't doing it's job as a filter, at least to some degree, i would have seen some evidence of crud in the bowls.

We carry them as well, although I am out of stock at the moment. Should have some soon.
