71 Road Runner wheel/tire - 03/10/14 02:39 AM

I am getting down to the end of parts buying for my 71 RR 340. How unusual is W21 Rallye and T34 F78x14 whitewalls? Just sort of struck me as an odd combination. Do not know how I would like that.

whitewalls were not unusual back in the day. But today most people install RWL Polyglas

As posted above white walls were the norm back in the day (70's), raised white letters were for those that had cash to burn

When new my '71 RR came with full wheel covers and whitewalls. Pimptastic!

I know white walls were a big deal back then. All my folks big GMs had them. I just thought with a styled wheel they were sort of odd. I do not remeber seeing many back then.

Oh, and back in the day (high school), the Cragars and fatties came off my '70 Challenger for winter time and rallye wheels with whitewall snow tires went on. Talk about sexy!

You were not alone...

(Except the snows were blackwall)...

(And I shed a tear when I think of all the OEM air cleaners, exhaust manifolds, and Rallyes that hit the dumpster back then)...

Before it evolved into

Pentastar;blue-chip...

And just how long did a set of H wheels stay on a new A12 car back then?

A prudent man could've become a 'horder', and became wealthy...

(As I'm sure some did)...

Especially when I hear of a set of E-body Rallyes at Vegas in the past..

Asking price-10k...

The 1971 F78-14 would've been a dual white stripe fiberglass belted tire. T34 on a '71 383 or 340 Road Runner ~ 369 units (2.7%)

Yep, that upper left tire and wheel cover photo is my Road Runner... my set of those wheel covers is nothing but garage ornamentation now. They'll NEVER go back on the car as long as I own it!

I am the proud owner of a 71 440 6-pack SuperBee that has F78-14's double whites and full wheel covers. And yes they are on the build sheet. Do to its probable rarity I am going to keep the car that way.

Are you sure?
IIRC for a '71 performance b-body
T34 - F78x14s were ONLY available on 340/383 cars
T46 - G78x14s were available on 340/383/440 cars

So, double whitewalls on Rallyes. Where in the blazes am I going to find double whites. Can barely find singles anymore.

Unfortunately only see those J78s. Not seeing F78s or G78s.

Those appear to be bias ply. This one is a driver. Single will be OK.

Re: 71 Road Runner wheel/tire - 03/12/14 10:57 PM

6bblgt I stand corrected!! it is T46 G78-14 with W-11 wheel covers. According to an older Galen report that came with the car this is quite rare. Only 17 super bees had this tire and if that is a true number I can't imagine to many of the 17 were six pack cars. Oh and yes it is a numbers matching car also. Thank You for correcting things!

The 17 number would be for combined 440 4bbl (26 US spec.) & 440 6bbl (99 US spec.) cars. 17/125=13.6% (about 1 out of 7 will have had the G78-14 when new). The G78-14 was NOT available with the HEMI.

1971 Super Bee 440 4bbl & 440 6bbl & HEMI ~ 147 cars US spec.
G70-14 w/RWL ~ 35 cars STANDARD
G78-14 dual/WS ~ 17 cars (no/charge)
G60-15 w/RWL ~ 95 cars ($63.10)

An additional 61 Super Bees (w/340 & 383, OPTIONAL at $18.75) had the G78-14 dual/WS tire.
