Dash pictures 68-70? - 02/20/14 12:46 PM

I am starting to reassemble the dash for my 68 GTX and realized I didn't take any pictures of it BEFORE I took it apart...shame on me...anybody got any "after restoration" pics of the inside of your 68-70 dash right before you bolted it back in, I have a wiring diagram but It would really help to be able to see the basic harness routing and get a general view of what it should look like after reasembly. Thanks

The '69 (rr) dashes are slightly different than the '68 (rr) dashes and the '68 GTX dash (I think) is different or unique to the GTX. I'll have to dig deep for a '68 GTX dash photo.

68 is a one off dash. just a couple little things are different. I believe the ignition switch is different and where I the fuse box mounts is different. the rest I think is the same.

I have photos of when I changed my under dash wiring harness but the dash was in it and also it was a major can of snakes under there but if you're replacing the original wiring harness it will have the bends and shape of where it was whether it was over the steering column or under it or to which switch it went to. I'm embarassed to even post these photos it was so bad and had I not done it there would have been a major melt down for sure....because of this

At this point I think you should just lay out the wiring harness across the dash/firewall and use the wiring schematic and get everything in the general areas. Then if you need a photo or help we'll be here and do our best to help.

Whats diffent here?

And if your redoing the wiring your almost better off pulling the window and the dash so you can work on it with out a head rush.

The under dash wiring harness replacement was done a few years ago and with the dash in. The car was painted and the glass and most of the interior were removed at the time. When I had a few electrical issues I found the burned wires and bad harness, at that point I wasn't going to pull windshield out and did the replacement with one big head rush

Re: Dash pictures 68-70? - 02/21/14 06:01 AM

Here is the only difference I found between a '68 and '69 wiring harness. This is the reason the parking lights go off on a '68 when the headlights are turned on. And I kind of think I know the engineering reason for this.

Note that your '68 has the yellow s/black tracer wire on the light switch plug and the '69 plug I'm posting has no yellow wire

Re: Dash pictures 68-70? - 02/21/14 06:18 AM

Thanks Pete and Mike...that's why I absolutely love this board...thanks guys, awesome info and pics. Of all of the things about restoring this GTX the dash has me the most perplexed...maybe it should or shouldn't but wiring makes me nervous and it have spent soooo much money and time with this car I really don't want to miswire or (gulp) fry anything. JS restorations did an outstanding job on the harness and switches, Just Dashes did the pads, Wards Radio did the radio, and Hodges Restorations did the dash frame and now Im waiting on the gauge cluster from Auto Instruments...then...all I have to do is put it together.... Pics coming

Re: Dash pictures 68-70? - 02/21/14 06:56 AM

I had two like new parts car wiring harnesses from two 1968 road runners and I debated about buying a reproduction '69 harness so I printed both the '68 and '69 wiring schematics from here: http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=27 and http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=18 and then tracked/traced EVERY wire on both the '68 and '69 schematics and learned a lot about the where and why and also the one small difference between the two. I'd start at a switch or point on the dash and work toward the firewall junction and the fuse box and then to the alternator, relay, and battery. That's how I found the yellow with black tracer missing on the '69.....because it doesn't have four side marker lights just side reflectors. I think engineering wise they turned the front parking lights off to minimize the demand for running the headlights along with the four side marker lights on the '68. Maybe the current demand for running the high and low four headlights, four side maker lights and two more front parking lights was deemed too much for the wiring system???

My first car in '69 was a brand new '69 road runner and I always remembered the parking lights being on with the headlights. When I got the '68 road runner I thought there was a problem with the wiring when the parking lights would go out when I turned on the headlights then I was told they go off on the '68's when the headlights went on.....and then it hit me with the side marker lights Oh it's been lots of fun learning even as I get older
