ECS offers a date coded transfer that I believe is correct. You would be a better judge of that than me. I am curious as to what coil to use under it though.

Scott, year one has them with a whole slew of date choices.

Year One .....The Last place I'd have looked for something "correct"

Thanks I'll have a look

*FWIW I'm sure ECS's transfers are awesome as are most everything I've seen from them

Has anyone tried Dixie Restorations? Lea at Dixie said they have them date coded for $70.00 If they are anything like there Alternators they should be very nice. I have not yet ordered mine but I do believe that I am going to call her and purchase one.

Re: Who sells the most accurate green stamped coil? - 12/02/13 05:18 PM

Sorry, but 71 was considered the end of the performance cars, so I guess they don't think there is enough demand for the newer cars. ECS doesn't even offer their rub offs for the late 71 cars. I know, it's a bummer.

Hold on now, many folks consider 1972 to be the last year for the Muscle Car Era - so you're not cutting me out just yet. Also, many 1972 date-coded reproductions are available and then they stop there...

This thread and the OE 340 thread made me go out and check the coil on my GTS. I have to take it off the car to verify but I think it may be the original.

We were talking about coils, and the most complete listing from Year One stops with 71, that is unless they have added more. My catalog is a couple of years old. I didn't make the rules I just follow them. After 71 the Hemi is gone, and except for a few six packs that escaped, it's gone to. The 400 was a slug compared to a good 383. Insurance and gas prices, and emissions, just the way it was, even though I like a lot of the newer cars, especially the later Charger SEs.

The 1972 440 Charger and other B-bodies still had something going on. Change the heads and compression on the '72 340's and you're back to '70/'71 performance.

For the 1973-1974 models, I think Chrysler screwed itself with the "Big Bumper" cars...

YO also skipped a bunch of early 71 cars, the earliest date for that model year starts at 320 (32nd week of 1970) which would not be correct for most cars built from August to October.

Re: Who sells the most accurate green stamped coil? - 12/03/13 03:59 AM

FYI, Dixie sells the coils made by M&H, Year One sells the coils made by M&H, and M&H sells direct. all seem to be similarly priced (YO only when on sale, etc.). So it looks like ECS's transfers and M&H are the only two choices out there right now?

We could drag this on forever and start to compare old Mopars to modern Muscle Cars...lol...I love the 1972 models...Sorry you don't. I also love many models from '66 to '71 as well. Enjoy whatever you have in the garage

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the ECS website said something about other transfers being available? Someone must be able to make a date that is needed.

I was speaking of Year One's coil dates, not ECS's transfer dates. Two different vendors.

Interestingly M&H supplies Year One who only lists 1971 dates going back to 320, but M&H lists earlier dates on their site. Maybe Year One could special order different dates? I don't know but I do know they charge more than M&H so why bother with the Middle man?

As an aside. It is my understanding that factory multi-carb cars had a shorter coil than single-carb applications. Can anyone verify this statement and if this is accurate where would an owner go to get an authentic "short" coil?

Re: Who sells the most accurate green stamped coil? - 12/03/13 10:11 PM

Restoration Plus Series coils are correct for many 1966 to 1971 Chrysler cars. It is important to note that there
were originally two distinct types of coils utilized in these vehicles, each manufactured by a different company.
The coil we have reproduced is known by restorers as the “Long Skinny Type” and was manufactured by Essex.
The Essex coil features the part number 2444241 and the words Made in USA stamped on the side of it. The Essex coil was used in a good majority of vehicles produced from 1966 to 1971. The other coil that was used was
known as the “Short Fat Type” and was manufactured by Prestolite. The Prestolite coil has part number 2444242
on the side of it and the words Made in USA on top of the tower and is not currently being reproduced.

Something I've found as a general rule Essex coils used green lettering. Prestolite used yellow lettering BUT this is NOT writen in stone.
I have seen yellow print Essex coils but have never come across a green or white print Prestolite coil.

Generaly 1972 and later used what is reffered to as the the flag print style . Similar to what is still avail thru Mopar but done in green print. It has the rectangular box on it, sometimes with the word ' Mopar ' printed in it

This is the ECS transfer, comparing it to the original above it's very nice but a bit too perfect as compared to an ink stamping which leaves dry, slightly smeared and uneven areas.

Re: Who sells the most accurate green stamped coil? - 12/04/13 10:54 PM

Interesting coil info found on fabo archive

"What is the diffrence in the 2 prong ballast resistor? I see some have .25ohm .75ohm or 1.45ohm is one better than the other? I no nothing about ohms. I have a 67 barracuda electronic ign, burned out what looks like may be the original ballast tonight just wondering what to replace it with.

The ballast should match the coil. So the waters are muddy. Here's the info right straight out of the 67 shop manual, with the coils and resistors ORIGINALLY used, so these are for "points" values

My 74 book, which is paper, is similar

Chrysler / Prestolite 2444242 coil, 1.6--1.79 ohms, 9400 to 1170 (must be 11700) secondary
Chrysler / Essex 2444211 1.41 to 1.55 primary, 8000 to 10200 secondary

Ballast (this is the dual one)

.5--.6 ohms (coil side)

4.75 to 5.75 for other side (feeds the ECU)"

Is it safe to decuct that if a car came with prestolite dist then a prestolite coil would be fitted? It's published in Herd's resto guide the above is correct, yet I know that book is full of errors.

Re: Who sells the most accurate green stamped coil? - 12/04/13 11:20 PM

The original coil from my Canadian built 1972 "A" body looked just like the 1970-71, etc coils...except it said "Made in Canada". When Performance Car Graphics made the new coil, they had never seen one marked like that before. This was around 2002..

I know, I know, pictures.... I took the pics on a camera that burned to little CDs and my current machine won't read them. I need to transfer from an older computer...then I'll put up a pic.

FWIW;
The Chrysler '72 parts book shows the coil as part# 2495531 (same as earlier years). The '72 FSM shows the same coil numbers as posted above by srt.

part number remained the same up thru at least the mid to late 70's ( maybe later.)

It's the outward appearence that changed

Re: Who sells the most accurate green stamped coil? - 12/15/13 06:52 PM

I posted these on the "Totally Anal 340 Thread" but thought they should be here as well.

I hoarded these coils up over the years. These are both from 71 Small blocks, the one dated 330 is from an early 71 340, the other might be from a 318, I'm not sure. They are identical in every aspect except the date codes (which are also pretty close). One of the brackets had a gold finish and one has a bracket with a silver finish, these have never been apart and enough original plating is visible to confirm both as genuine.

Notice how the date codes run across the coils on the short versions and lengthwise on the taller coils. Also notice the gap in the part# ink stamping on the taller coils which is not present on the short coils.
