Vinyl dying interior hard plastic parts ??

Vinyl dying interior hard plastic parts ?? - 11/22/13 08:00 PM

Years ago when the car was painted they got overspray on things like the kick panels and the pillar covers. Stripping it it off with any thinner is out of the question (lacquer thinner won't touch the paint and melts the plastic). I'm leaning towards a vinyl dye. Black over black.

Any thoughts or advice?

A friend of mine used the paint from Herbs to freshen up a set of door panels and seat backs. He was very impressed and has convinced me to try it on mine. His operations was white to white same with mine. It might be worth a try.

SEM Laudau black it is then.

Does it cover well on a single coat? The overspray is yellow on black. I don't want to loose the texture of the parts by having to apply multiple coats.

x 2

I use bulldog adhesive prior to spraying on a clean part. This seems to eliminate any fish eye. It sprays a little different than normal spray paints. two light coats are better than one heavy coat. Two should cover

SEM's black covers in one coat...I've even dyed black interior pcs using SEM's white, and that only took 2 coats

I don't see why not, you'll have to match up your white as the 68-9 white is different than the 70 white, I used SEM's Super White as that was a good match for 1970, one recommendation when dyeing pcs white with SEM (or any color for that matter) SEM has several clears, Low Lustre, Satin, Gloss, I'd recommend the Low Lustre Clear (as it looks natural on the panel, no indication of having a clear finish) be applied immediately after the final coat of color, esp white, as this makes it easy to maintain for stains/cleaning later, without disturbing the sprayed color...I used SEM's white/clear to alter some black interior pcs in my Charger to match the new white interior panels, seat covers from Legendary, such as the upper pads, armrests, mouldings, seat hinges, roof rails, as well as the steel perimeter sections of the doors...still looks sharp 10 yrs later, with no issues

The upper door pad, armrest, and door perimeter are SEM, just the main panel is originally white (new Legendary panel), the rest was black, coverage was in 2 medium coats...in this pic, the panels were painted about 8yrs ago

Steve,

I'll list your current choices to achieve a "correct" pearl white interior finish:

1. SEM Phantom White pn#15003 will match the pearl white shade, but will not have any pearl sheen to it...it's a close match for small inconspicuous parts that don't need a dead nuts match

2. Contacting SEM directly, and supplying a color sample they can provide a formula for your local supplier to mix

3. Or you can contact Korrect Kolor 1-732-846-1044 and tell Rob that you need the 2 part white pearl color dye kit to match 202G (Pearl White) this is the company Legendary uses to dye their Pearl White repro interior pcs

4. Or, last choice is to use SEM spray interior dye Super White pn# 15103, then topcoat it with Clear Pearl Interior spray pn# PT3040Z ($12 a can) from the Parts Place www.thepartsplaceinc.com (GM parts supplier ) or call them at 1-603-365-1800 using these 2 products will achieve the desired results, controlling the amount of pearl is strictly up to the user
