Charger Wheel Opening Moulding Wont Fit New Quarter

Charger Wheel Opening Moulding Wont Fit New Quarter - 10/25/13 12:38 AM

Just got my new AMD quarter panel skins for my 69 Charger.
Went to check the fit of the wheel opening moulding/trim and found they don't fit well in the lower rear section. Thinking I have 2 options, slit the trim and bend further in , or slit the skin and bend it out to meet the trim.
Anyone else using AMD or any brand skins run in to this?
How do you guys think I should proceed?
Thanks for the input.

Are your WOM OE or after market? Either way i would adjust the molding not the Quarter. Larry J

They are oem. Have 2 sets and both fit the same. Both left and right quarter skins have the exact same issue.

Had the same issue with my AMD replacement fender on 1968 Charger. I was able to bend the trim enough to make work, but a better solution would have been to make a relief cut in the moulding, bend to shape, and get the stainless welded up and repolished.

The quarter panels aren't installed yet, correct?

I'd reshape the quarter by stretching the edge with a shrinker-stretcher. 15 minute job and it'll be the factory correct shape.

No, just doing preliminary fit up.
I hate the thought of modifying an OEM part to fit an aftermarket part.
The stretcher is a little beyond my means. I was more thinking cut a slit on the inner wheel well lip near the body line that doesnt match the trim. THat would then allow me to bend the panel out to meet the trim. Not sure how that will effect where the trunk drop off meets the lower part of the rear panel tho. Guess I need to get everything temporarily mounted on the car before deciding whats the best thing to do.
Was hoping to find others that have had this exact issue to see what approach they took.
THanks for the suggestions.....keep em coming.

Install the qtrs properly, then fit the wheel lip moulding, if need be, used a shrinker/stretcher, to tweak the moulding, or tweak the qtr panel before install....if you don't have a shrinker/stretcher, Eastwood has a decent "backyard" set up for the home hobbiest, invest in it, it'll make fabbing stuff up a lot easier

I'm not a body man but this is what my painter said he's had to do before.

Good job on checking these things out now. I cringe when I see posts like this when the car has a fresh coat of paint on it.

The reproduction Charger wheel lip moldings are not made of stainless steel like the originals were. They can be shaped to fit the panels easier than the OEM ones. I was able to shape them to the panels by pressing them with my thumbs. Wear a good pair of gloves while doing it.

The guy doing the body work on my 70 Charger had to modify the AMD quarters in this area too......you will also find the wheel house and trunk extension will not fit the quarter panel all that well either. I bought all AMD panels and still had significant problems in this area.

This is close to my experience.

..... from my '65 Satellite. I got quarter patches from Kramer, my body man spent some time tweaking them for a good fit and profile to the moldings. However, when time came to mount the arch moldings, they didn't fit even as close you show in your pic. I was tired from a long day of working on the car and just wanted it done - so....

...I screwed the "difficult" non-conforming ends in first, then carefully but forcefully moved up the stainless arch molding 'til I had it all on. All four arches needed this treatment, some holes were difficult as #&^%$$, but I got it done and they look fine.

Now I suspect that's how they were treated on the assembly line - just slam them on and get her done!

Best of luck, -Art
