B Body Bench Seat Restoration

B Body Bench Seat Restoration - 10/01/13 04:47 PM

The front bench in my Coronet is REALLY tired and sagging. I feel like I'm gonna hit the floor when I sit in it, and the small of my back hits the bottom of the seat back.

Is there an easy way to fix it back up or should I look for a replacement?

Your local upholster can fix you up, or hit the local upholstery store for some springs.

After researching on the internet, I came across a guy that used 9 gauge wire to stiffen up the seat. I bought a roll at home depot and got some crimp clips and did the same.

you basically lay the wire the length of the bench and secure it to the sides, along with each spring. Here is a pic from his site.

Ok, found the original website where I got the information. Select the 68 Dodge Dart on the left side.

Bench seats have thin "spring" wire that runs through the burlap on top of the bottom cushion. When I recover my seat alot of these were broken. I bought thin springy wire at a hobby store and threaded it through the new burlap. it was a pain to do but should help stiffen up the seat as it should distribute the load across more springs.

I know that wire is broken in my seat as I can see it coming from underneath. Looks like I have another winter project!
