71 Challenger 440 6 pack hood emblem holes - 09/10/13 01:49 AM

Anyone have a diagram or picture of hood with the layout of the 3 holes for the 440 six pack emblem? The OEM hood I have on it only has 2 holes. Thanks!!

steel sports hood had two hole emblems. only shakers had three hole emblems apart from hemicuda emblems were all three hole as there was no option for steel sports hood hemicuda`s. you need two hole 440 sixpack emblems.

Actually steel hood Challenger 440 SIX PACK nameplates had 3 pins not two.
They are in different locations then the shaker as shown by NOS versions of both, 2998804 being the steel hood and the same for both sides.
Obviously the nameplates themselves differ in not only pin location but thickness of a left and right shaker nameplate and the length of pin is always longer on the shaker nameplates.
And again obviously you cannot fit the steel hood 440 SIX PACK nameplate in original shaker scoops hole locations.

I had the same problem, two holes on the hood and three pins on my emblems. I did finally get a reply from someone with a hood with factory installed 6 pack emblems and was able to locate mine from that. Anyway here is what you need to do:
Use a large refrigerator magnet (like a calender, etc, that is printed on a solid sheet magnet that will stick to the hood) and push the pins of one of your emblems into the magnet, mark and punch out the holes, trim around the outside to make a template of your emblems that will lay flat on the hood (this aids in placement, you can stick them to the hood and stand back and look at them). Trim the holes so that they are round, clean and neat so you can find the center of them with the center punch. Start at the rear corner of the hood and mark a line 6 inches in toward the center at the rear edge of the hood, both sides, from this point measure straight forward toward the front of the hood exactly 17 & 3/8 inches and mark a line up and down on the raised part of the bulge. This is your front to rear placement. On the driver side the rearmost part of the "K" fits here, on the passenger side the frontmost part of the "4" fits here. Place the template on the hood and position it as close as possible to the center of the hood bulge, make a mark through the template pin holes. Remove template, you now have the three pin hole locations. Your emblems should have small plastic covers on the pins, these are the retainers. They are intended to "snap" into the holes. To make this work the holes must be spaced exactly the right distance apart and drilled exactly the right diameter. I found a .185 drill bit to be correct (3/16). You might want to get a bit and drill a flat piece of sheet metal using your template to make sure your emblems will fit the holes before you drill your hood. Also they are hard to remove once you pop them all the way in, so be cautious there too. Attached is a pic of my hood with the emblem on the pass side, but not pushed all the way flat.

Very good idea and many thanks JT4406!! Are you sure on 17 3/8 from the front of the hood though? I know these hoods exceed 60 inches? Thanks again!

Quote:

measure straight forward TOWARD the front of the hood

That is measured from the back of the hood. That will be the back edge of each emblem. Here's a pic of an untouched original (as far as I know).
You be the judge, I would guess that no two were exactly the same.
