Good Better Best Repo fuel tank and sender

Good Better Best Repo fuel tank and sender - 09/04/13 09:29 PM

I need to buy a fuel tank and 3/8 sending unit for a 1970 cuda' N95/ECS... basically what all 1971 cuda's came with.
On ebay tanks range from $150 for a unit made in Canada to an AMD tank that costs $250...

Who makes a 3/8 sender that works with the fuel gauge?

Thanks

I never had any problems with the Spectre tank , check Rockauto , that's where I found it the cheapest .

As far as the sending unit check Dixe resto, those were the only I have seen no complaints about , if they have any left.

Thanks John. I looked on Dixie's site and there were no e-body sending units listed... I sent them an email to check on availability.

I've have used a couple of Van's sending units and they don't seem to be calibrated right. I've actually pulled them apart to reset the internals. Bending arm wasn't enough.

Re: Good Better Best Repo fuel tank and sender - 09/05/13 05:11 AM

I'll second JohnRR's recommendation for a Spectra gas tank and ordering it from Rock Auto for the best price. That's where I got mine a year or so back for my '71 Challenger. It looks perfect and the price was right.
IIRC Dixies posted the good sender units are long gone, from what I've seen people post here and on other sites, no one currently offers a good accurate sender unit at this time. I cleaned up my original one when I replaced my tank, it's close but I'd replace it with a new one if anyone offered an accurate part today.

I'll get a Spectra tank but I still need a sender... the car is a 340 car so it has a 5/16 sender; the new engine is a bit bigger.

Re: Good Better Best Repo fuel tank and sender - 09/05/13 01:57 PM

Hi Jason,

We do not have any e-body sending units left. We do have some other applications, but the e-bodies are gone.

For those interested, we have:

67-76 A-body in 3/8"
62-65 B-body in 5/16" or 3/8"
66-67 B-body in 3/8"
71-74 B-body in 3/8"

Thanks,
Randy

Randy,

The current available fuel sending units are crAp. We all know that.

Is there a vendor that would venture to make a quality unit? I am certain that many, many people would purchase them.
Would Dixie Restoration Parts consider making them?

There are firms out there that calibrate sending units if I recall. I remember, when I read Hemming's Motor News a lot more, there were services that did that......

Re: Good Better Best Repo fuel tank and sender - 09/05/13 06:23 PM

Hi Ola,

You can thank a certain big mail order company for whoring out the sending unit market by making them overseas when we wouldn't sell to them at less than our cost. I don't have the finances to do another production run that would sit on the shelves for years while people bought the cheap overseas ones because mine were "too expensive", or it's just a "driver". I think my last production run was '06 or '07 and I sold the last of the e-body units in '12. The ones listed above that I still have are from that same run.

I don't know what the cost would be to make another run today. I still have my contacts, and would be glad to check. I could probably do as little as 100 units. In order to go forward they would need to have a deposit paid. I couldn't say what that amount would be pending a quote from the plant. So, if anyone is interested, please reply to this post with the quantity you would be willing to pay a deposit on. For back of the napkin math, figure that deposit at $50 each.

Thanks,
Randy

I would like a 5/16" for a 69 RR. Could the run be split or would it have to be all B or E's? Bought one at the Nats and it is a piece of crap. Looks exactly like the one I bought several years ago for $110.00. Gave $50.00 for it.

It's a minimum number per application. However, I might have a NOS 5/16" B-body if you're interested. Email me your shipping zip and I'll see if I can find it and give you a price.

Thanks,

As for the sending unit, i bought a 5/16 for my 70 Challenger last year from a Dodge dealer. It came in a Mopar box. Some dealers still have the old books and some parts are still available. Not sure how well it works yet but it sure looks better the the repro one i have.

This one doesn't look to bad. Only about $65 with the ride.

I went through the entire fuel system on my 440 Six Pack 71 Challenger last spring.

New Spectre tank, new Fine Lines 3/8" stainless fuel lines back to front, new Carter mechanical fuel pump and pushrod and new lines to the carbs.

I bought that exact stainless sending unit (3/8") and installed it with the factory ground strap.

The only thing I was warned about was the included retaining ring isn't formed correctly and can cause leaks so I blasted and reused my original ring.

The sending unit seems to be working great.

The factory fuel gauge reads correctly depending on how much fuel I have in the tank and seems to go down correctly with my fuel usage.

I think a number of issues people are having are ground, wiring and gauge related.

I don't plan on testing just how close I can get to empty on the gauge but I'm very happy with how everything is working.

With the apparent popularity of the '68-'70 'B' body with the 5/16", I'd be up for six (6) of them. If this were to become a reality, PM me and the deposit will be on its way.

I'm not kidding.

That was a bargin , when I was looking for an B body tank earlier this year Rockauto was the cheapest including the shipping , shipping for me was less than 25 but that might be because the shipping warehouse and destination were in the same state ?

Randy just wondering if anything came about this. I would be in for a 3/8 unit with the vapor return line for a 70 Dodge Charger. I see you sell the units made in Mexico on your website. Any problems with those units?

Interesting. The seller is Jeff from 521 Restorations. I bought most of my sheet metal from him for my RR. Great guy. Ive tried 3 different 3/8" sending units over the years and none have ever been close to correct. I'd be willing to try another just to get a freaking working gas gauge.

But yeah, any updates on running another batch of properly made units?

Re: Good Better Best Repo fuel tank and sender - 02/27/14 04:32 PM

It would be great if someone with the proper knowledge would just take these crap ones and calibrate them for a fee. They all must somehow be fuctional. Guys with a $50 sender claim they are accurate while some of the more expensive ones aren't. If the tanks are the same I wonder why someone couldn't set them to all read properly if they knew where to adjust it. There are lots of these inaccurate unit laying around that are useless and lots more sold everyday.

Re: Good Better Best Repo fuel tank and sender - 03/01/14 04:28 AM

Hey Guys,

To run another batch from the original vendor would require a minimum of 100 pcs per part number. The cost will be $80 plus shipping. Shipping is inbound shipping to me, and outbound shipping to you. This is a group buy for all who want to participate, and requires an initial deposit of $40.

The balance is due upon my receipt of the units. You will have 14 days to send the balance or the units will be put up for sale, and your deposit forfeited.

The vendor will run these in between normal production runs for current cars. So, there is no guaranteed time frame for completion. Typically in the past it took about 3 months from order submission to receipt of product.

If you're interested, please email us the unit you're interested in and the quantity. Do Not send a PM. Once we reach 100 units, you will be notified that your deposit is due.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Randy

Scott, I really don't see the demand being there for 5/16" A-body units, but if enough people want them I'll run them.

I did make some 3/8" versions in silver cad from the original vendor as an upgrade. I have some left if you're interested. No, it's not OE correct, but if your 340 staves for fuel on the top end like so many of mine have, it might be worth considering. I offer great discounts off of Fine Lines fuel lines too, so you can upgrade everything at once.

Thanks,
Randy

That's not the fault of the sending unit for petes sake.
You have a very rusty fuel tank and lines that need to be replaced to be sure you got all that rust out of your fuel system.
