one piece trunk floor installation-yes it will fit! - 08/08/13 11:16 PM

I see this asked over and over. Can a one piece B body trunk floor be installed with the 1/4's on? Why yes it can! I do it all the time.
Here I will show how:

Our subject is a 68 Road Runner but this method works for any 68-70 B body including Chargers, and 70-74 E bodies too.

First off, most B bodies that need a trunkfloor also need the rear crossmember and bumper reinforcement plates as well. The layers of steel swell up over time with rust.

On this car I used AMD panels. The trunkfloor fit perfect. The crossmember and bumpers plates fit very well too, althought the crossmember did lack the recess for the frame rail tabs on it's top flange, but that is easily remedied with a hammer in about 2 minutes.

I've been restoring Mopars for 25 years. Panel replacement and rust repair are tedious jobs that many people seem to dread, but I love it!

Hats off to AMD for making these excellent panels!

On 68-70 Chargers this can be done without removing the rear crossmember providing the rear valance is off.

With the rear crossmember removed, the trunk floor will slip in below the tail panel. the tailpanel is attached to the trunkfloor anyway, so only a few more spotwelds need to be seperated at either end to allow the trunk floor to pass through.
Don't forget to weld on the gas tank strap supports first!

Note that on this car, the trunk extensions were left in place too. The AMD trunk floor fit was perfect.

a tip about plug welding: I like to predrill my panel, then screw it down snug. I then remove a few screws, drill into the rail flanges slightly to ensure the weld gets ideal penetration for a strong plugweld. Practice will teach you how much to drill. If you just try to plug weld directly to the rail flange you may not get adequate penetration and have weak welds. This has the added benefit of creating nice nearly flush plug welds that need minimal grinding.
Have a look from below often while welding to see if the weld has created a nice little button that shows it has penetrated well.

and while the crossmember is off, I make up new flanges for the rail ends since they are almost always thin or non existant.

as a side note, look at the tailpanel on this car. No spot welds! this is a virgin car, yet the tailpanel was mig welded on to the trunkfloor. Under all the factory paint and seam sealer. Proof that the factory didn't always do thngs as planned. I suppose the spot welder was broken down or the guy went on coffee break! Not the first time I have seen this on old Mopars.

ummm. quick question...are the original trunk drops (extensions)still
in place when you do this? or have they been removed?

If they have been removed,
then what do you use to support the A$$ end of the car?

If memory serves me right (and it's been several years since I last
did this job), on 68-70 B Bodies (non-charger) the down flange from the trunkfloor over the rear crossmember to the bottom/down flange of the tail panel is what supports the Quarter panels/rear structure..

If all of that is released (which is what you would "have" to do to replace the entire floor as 1 piece) then there is nothing in place to keep the rear quarters from "dropping down".

What are using to support/brace the rear to maintain your point of reference?

I don't see anything in the pictures...
Maybe I'm just getting old please correct me if I'm wrong....

The trunk extensions were in place still, although they don't keep much from moving.
Nothing moves much when apart, unless too many panels are removed at once.
The rear shackles were disconnected so that there was no weight or stress from the rear axle assmbly hanging. Body supported. Always good to make measurements before, during and after too.

Great information. If you were going to replace rear frame rails as a unit, along with a new trunk pan how would you sequence it and support body? New full floor pan already in, wheel tubs are out, rear crossmember and tail panel is original and nice...rear cross member shown was not included and wrong for A12. rear foot pans to be replaced also. rest is nice.

See pic of donor section.

Bumping this back up for Ogopogo and anyone else interested
The Challenger has a wider space between the crossmember and the tail panel which means it should slip in even easier than on a B body.

Bringing back to life... I see the trunk pan can be installed via the rear crossover removed. BUT, if the crossover and quarters are worth staying put, but the rear filler "dutchman" panel needs to be removed, can the full trunk floor be installed? I have a Superbird I will be working on. The rear aero window plug needs to be removed and repaired along with the rear filler panel. While the rear filler panel's removed, will its absence allow the installation of a full one-piece trunk floor pan?

Thanks in advance..

I rediscovered this article and WOW !!! Thanks a ton for the documentation. I have a recently acquired 1970 Road Runner that needs a complete floor... This will help tremendously toward me trying to do it myself... Ironic that my crossmember needs to be removed anyways.. Nice..
