Best way to remove old masking tape? - 07/22/13 04:28 PM
So my body man masked of all of the holes in the floor of my charger when he was painting it. He did not remove it and now I have lots of stuck cheap a$$ed masking tape that I need to remove. What is a good product to remove it? I would like to find something that will not hurt the paint. Thanks Tim

I think the product called Goof Off would work great, any good hardware store will have it.

I agree. Although from experience of wrapping trim in it and marking what it fits...wait 25 years and it will be long gone... ha.

Soak with some penetrating oil and let sit overnight.

Soak with either WD-40 or mineral spirits (charcoal lighter). Go back a few hours later with a plastic scraper or bondo spreader that won't hurt the paint. Done.

A heat gun can be used as it softens tape adhesive and the tape can be peeled off as if it was fresh. Any residue can be cleaned with prep-sol or any other pre-paint cleaner.

IF those suggestions don't work, GumOut carb cleaner will.

At the garage we had, we used lighter fluid to remove old inspection sticker residue off the glass. Can't say I ever tried it on a painted/primed surface. Those erasers they sell for removing stripes that you use with a drill would take it off also.
