Correct shaker bubble color? - 05/21/13 05:51 PM

For a Sept. built '71 Cuda, what would be the correct color of the shaker bubble? Thanks.

There is an interesting resto article in the newest Mopar Collectors Guide in which Frank Badalson says that he has documented both black organosol and dark argent bubbles for both '70 and '71 bubbles. He states (IIRC) that there seemed to be no correlation to dates and color of the bubbles. Check it out.

I've seen it and agree with Frank, a few leftover silver bubbles made it onto 71 cars. That said, anything but black organosol was the exception, the factory spec for 71 bubbles was black.

My Sep-built N-96 R/T Challenger had a black scoop. My May-built N-96 non-R/T Challenger had an argent bubble. It probably wasn't planned, but the argent bubble looks perfect with a non-R/T Challenger (argent grille and tail panel match nicely).

I don't think there is a right answer, as every possible combination - probably happened.

I think there is a disconnect between what was "envisioned" as an engineer/designer/stylist's concept for the appearance of the 'Cuda/Challenger/Challenger R/T in conjunction with the SHAKER hood and what was done (or eliminated by the "bean counters" at the 19th hour) at the factory and/or dealer. In the "big picture" this look would include the bumpers/grill/hood/mirrors/tail panel as a whole. This was a minor detail for Chrysler Corp. with ~800 SHAKER cars out of ~1.5M produced for the '71 model year.

'71 'Cuda w/painted grill & Challenger R/T (black grill) = black SHAKER bubble
vs.
'71 'Cuda w/argent grill & Challenger (argent grill) = argent SHAKER bubble

* '70 was worse with body-colored bubbles & dare I say R/T SE finish panels.
