Requesting help on 70 TA, 2 items - 12/27/12 10:35 PM

Looking for information on fast ratio splash apron for automatic. I assume it looks like the plastic version for the non-fast ratio. Anyone have photos of complete part?

Steering column lockout link: any photos of cross link and frame bracket. When we installed headers back in the 70's I removed these parts and now cant find them, or recall what they looked like.

Couldn't find them in the shop manual.

Thanks for the help!!!

There is a frame rail sheild for sale in e-body parts.

I beleive the starter shield pictured above is for a 67-74 A-body.

Attached is the shield I took off my 71 Cuda 340 with T/A steering, Sales code S74. It's a little bent up (I've since straightened it) and the screw was added to hold the rubber on by a previous owner (welded this shut and ground down).

From an AAR. Note the notch for the brake line.

I think that one is a winner. I know the fast ratio cars did not use the plastic sheild, and no reason why the 71 ebody with fast ratio would not use the sameone.

Barry are you sure that car is 4 speed? You can see the bottom of the transmission and it looks like auto????

Weren't 4 speeds not supposed to have the sheild?

Interestingly this shield is rather similar to the one used on 70 B-bodies. In section 12-04-4 of the parts book it lists 2925315 for both B-bodies and E bodies with 340. There was a technical service bulletin for 71 model year that announced the 340 ebodies were going to have a fast ratio box after a certain date. On this bulletin it makes mention of this splash shield and refers to it as part number 3583003 and lists the rubber seal as 3583004.

Attached is a picture of the backside of my T/A shield and below I will attach what I have been told is a 70 B-body shield. To me it looks like you can modify the B-body one to make an E-body.

B-body back side.

Also I sent my oriignal rubber flap to James Fillmore at Detroit Muscle Technologies and he is getting a tool made to make these.

It is an auto car, thanks for catching that. I'll edit it to avoid confusion. I took photos of every AAR I saw that day, the 4-speed car was parked on gravel, this one is on pavement.

FYI to all interested parties.

My associate Bill Meerholz finshed up on several refurbished shields for TA/AAR and 71 340 a couple of months ago. Gorgeous. They are now now available on his website (www.bmcuda.com). Correct masticated rubber seal and staples etc. He also added the seal to my NOS shield.

Bill Rolik do you sell the correct mounting hardware for the splash shield that Bill Meerholz has for sale on his website?

Also which of the two types of plastic splash shields would be correct for a June 1971 built e body?

Thanks

Fast Ratio steering/starter shields for E bodies are metal not plastic.
I have some in stock that are completely restored.
have attaching hardware also.

What about the smaller splash shields (single angle or straight bottom) in the front of the suspension? Bill Rolik list two different types depending on when built, but there seems to be some overlap as to what type was installed on the vehicle per the description. Just want to make sure I purchase the correct shields.
Thanks

Re: Requesting help on 70 TA, 2 items - 01/03/13 04:31 PM

Are these shields on both auto & 4 spd. cars with T/A power steering box? Why were they different from a regular E body? I have a Challenger T/A 4 spd. that doesn't have any shield. I guess that it's missing. I don't see any mounting holes in my frame rail. Where should I look for thes mounting holes? Thanks.

That is correct. I did not find # 3583003 in the 1970-71 master parts book. Also the master parts book shows #3404435 for all E bodies exc. 340. Why?

Re: Requesting help on 70 TA, 2 items - 01/04/13 04:37 AM

I don't believe these were on manual shift cars. They are commonly referred to as "starter shields" but I think their actual intention was to protect the transmission cooler lines.

The reference in the parts book to 340 and all except 340 should most likely be 340 with fast ratio.

I have an earlier built 340 automatic car without the fast ratio box and it has the plastic shield like most other E-bodies.
