Old dealershp research

Old dealershp research - 12/18/12 05:25 PM

I am looking at a car that has a reproduction window sticker that states the selling dealer was: Southern Motors 901 S. Main St., High Point, N.C.
I have tried to locate this dealership with no luck. Does anyone know if there is a data base that actually shows the names and locations of the old dealerships?
Do the companies that make the window stickers pull names out of their butts?
Thanks guys.

There are several hundred dealers listed in the link below. I have heard there is a book with the dealers listed but have no info about it. Perhaps another member will have more info about the book.

My car came with a repop window sticker that the previous owner had the "guru" make with a dealership in Colorado listed on.

Is there a way to detemine from a build sheet where the car was sold new or is it pure BS?

Re: Old dealershp research - 12/18/12 08:34 PM

No dealership data on broadcast sheets.

Some of the newer ones (mid 1970s) do have a state code but that is it.

"New" window stickers are full of guesses & sometimes outright lies.

Southern Motors was the dealership sponsor on the 1/4s of Richard Petty's Daytona 500 winning '71 RR (& others).

A popular "wish my car was sold there" choice for a reproduction window sticker. Dealer code 64608

6bblgt,
Thanks for the reply on Petty's car. I contacted a Dodge store who's address is only 2 blocks away from the address for Southern Motors on the windowsticker and they have been selling Dodges there since 1950 and they told me they had never heard of a Southern Motors in High Point.

Re: Old dealershp research - 12/19/12 04:32 AM

Is this the address you have?

SOUTHERN CHRYSLER PLYMOUTH INC
901 SOUTH MAIN STREET
HIGH POINT NORTH CAROLINA 27260

I see you listed the address in the original post.

Here's an authentic window sticker from Southern Motors in '73.

Re: Old dealershp research - 12/19/12 06:51 AM

Is there anyway to see if info still exists on an old dealership??
Our RR came from Rittenhouse Motors in Maumee Ohio. They have been out of business for a long time but both our 69 RR's came from there New. We have the sales paperwork for 1 of the cars just not the car we still own.
I know who the original owner was and talked to him one time but can't seem to get ahold of him now.
Does anyone have old dealership paperwork??
This may be a bad question but Oh well it never hurts to try.
Thanks David

Southern motors has been out of business for years. I remember it well. I had an aunt that lived just down the street form the carlot. I remember seeing one of Petty's cars in the small showroom.

Re: Old dealershp research - 12/19/12 02:15 PM

My cars came from Roseville Chrysler in late 1969 and the other one from Birmingham Chrysler Plymouth. Birminghams is not on the Hamtramck registry. Ill have to get the dealer info to them to add to their list.

Thanks, but no need.

Once I heard that dealership books exist with all of the names, I stopped adding them one by one. It would take a lot less time to sit down with one of the books & do it all at once.

I just need one of the books.

The location of the old Southern motors in High Point is now part of Gulford Tec Comm Coll. They were teaching an automotive class in the old building.

I have those from 1988 (Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge & Jeep/Eagle) many musclecar era dealers were long gone, changed names or moved.

Sorry, I wasn't clear - there is another volume with Jeep/Eagle dealerships (some that are current CDJF ??).

I've had the same idea, Barry. From what I understand, you'd need a lot more than one... Dealerships came and went and dealer codes were reused. Each year's books were pretty thick and were not available to the public. The traveler's guides don't list all the dealerships, only the ones with large parts and service departments near major roads and highways. The ones I've seen don't have dealer codes. There were a lot of dealerships in small cities and towns that sold several car brands, tractors, irrigation systems, etc. but couldn't service a new car. Same for smaller dealerships in bigger cities.

I would be happy with the 1970 dealership version.

It's funny that you would mention pulling dealership names out of the posterior... I talked with maxwedge.com several years ago about updating the dealer database for central Ohio. I guess he didn't want to take my word for it. He lists only 3 dealers in Columbus when in fact there were probably at least 10 at one time.

Too bad we've gotten so suspicious that words aren't enough.

Nothing to do with suspicion, just so inundated with emails that I had to shut off my contact page and haven't taken the time to catch up. No offense intended!

Chrysler Corp. - 9xxxx series dealer numbers are usually associated with "Company Cars".

What did Chrysler Historical decode it as?

Do you have dealer codes, names & addresses?
These are the only two I have DEALER codes for that were specifically in Columbus. Both were still in business as of the '88 Dealer Directory.

Chrysler Historical decoded it as "= Code N/A". I don't understand how Chrysler Historical doesn't know their own dealer codes.

Attached is a section of the sheet that Chrysler Historical sent.

Re: Old dealershp research - 11/10/13 07:56 AM

I was somewhat lucky with my 71 demon 340. I found the owner of my car from 1973 to 79. They were able to tell me a lot about it, it was ordered by the lead mechanic at bettenhausen dodge who owed it only a year or so then sold it to a friend of theirs Tom Reynolds who had it about a year and then sold it to him, he just added headers and it would run hi 13's 14 flat. Anyway I contacted bettenhausen a scat pack dealer back then told them the story, they said all records were kept 10 years then destroyed, but said they would ask the owner. He said he could not recall the car or even the mechanic, said they sold a lot of hot dodges back then thus the scat pack designation. They even asked a couple mechanics that have been there from the mid 70's !! No luck. Was pleasantly surprised that they did ask around and tried to help me,

My 70 BEE came out of Connecticut. I talked to the 2nd owner that bought in 1977 and lived in conn.,and it still has the last tag on it, 1980 conn., I have the build sheet but no window sticker. The 2nd owner told me it came from Putnam Motors 44 Railroad ave. Greenwich Connecticut. Does anyone have any info or memorabilia from this dealership?

Re: Old dealershp research - 11/10/13 09:38 PM

A number of years BEFORE 9/11, I had found, through some research, that the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), which today has several regional offices, has access to VIN records on file in the form of microfiche (for older models), for ALL vehicles at least as far back as the musclecar era. The info showed the selling dealer, their address, dealer code, and the exact date that the car was delivered to the dealership. Since I had brokered the sale of a large number of cars during this period, I was curious as to what dealers through which they had been sold, and this prompted me to do a bit of detective work in order to have the correct info to have accurate reproduction window stickers created.

I was fortunate in that based on the way I had presented my request with the Bureau (for historical data only, etc.), I had developed a friendly rapport with one of the administrative assistants, and she, after taking note of the VIN numbers, would ask me to stay on hold for about 10-15 minutes so she could retrieve the info. A well placed gift of flowers would follow each reply for this info.

This assistant had ultimately moved on to another career, and subsequent calls were answered by more senior people in the Bureau, who had informed me that the information was still in its archives, but because of higher security levels, the only way this information would be released would be through law enforcement agencies or insurance companies. Through contacts I had, I used this option a few times, and was successful. But fast forward to 2013, I would doubt that a request from a private citizen, and subsequently ANY positive response would be offered by calling the NICB directly, so I would not waste any effort to do so. If you have contacts in law enforcement, try "pleading your case" to see if they will do you a favor. They would have to probably make the request from the NICB based on an investigation they are conducting. If your contact is in a supervisory position with an insurance company, they would need to provide their license number when making an inquiry, which would certainly have to be based on theft or some kind of fraud investigation.

Good Luck!

geez... I had forgotten all about this post. It's been a year(almost).

No dealer codes just remembering. My dad was a car guy so I spent a lot of time in car lots.

Lets see..Columbus Ohio dealers:

Spitzer Dodge
Byer's Chrysler/Plymouth, E. Town Street
Byer's W. Mound Street
Northland Dodge Morse Rd
Westland Chrysler/Plymouth Broad St
Trenor Dodge E. Main St
Eastland(?) Chrysler/Plymouth(later on Bill Swad)Hamilton Rd.
Capital City Dodge, E. Broad Street

????????

Seems like there was a Dodge dealership next to Westland Chrysler/Plymouth but can't remember the name... might have been Trader Bud's?

Update on this post;

Later discovered that Frawley Dodge in East St. Louis changed ownership to Lou Brock Dodge in 1969.
More recently learned that this building was torn down in 2021, after a fire.

I am approaching 40 years of owning my Charger and I have researched the dealership over the years with little results. But, I did come up with some old pics of the dealership bldg even before it a Dodge dealer.
It was located in Lindenhurst, NY (Long Island) dealer # 53866. Mac Tun Motors (aka: Lindenhurst Dodge)

This is a collage of 3 pics….the bldg back in 20’s as Oak Garage (Nash dealer), then 50’s as Dodge/Plymouth, and finally in 1990’s with my car in front, after it became Island Chrysler/Jeep. Unfortunately, they knocked the whole bldg down and built a bank in its place. Ughh

The dealership building I used to own in Rockford, Illinois Strandquist Chrysler Plymouth started out as a DeSoto dealership in 1944. It had it's charter removed in 2009 in the big dealership purge. bawling1962, 1973, and late 2000's...

The 73 fury wagon my mom had in the late 70s/early 80s came from Strandquist. I distinctly remember the decal on the tailgate and wondered how it ended up so far from there to wind up with us .... I have no idea who my dad bought it from but I can guarantee it was a private party sale from the south suburbs of Chicago. As we're all the cars my dad ever bought since I can remember. It was from either a classified ad in the Chicago heights star newspaper or a call in to the trading post program on the local AM station out of the same town. Only 2 places that dad ever bought cars from.....

I've searched for years to find any information on my hometown Plymouth dealership, Galen & Jones, McKeesport, PA, where I sat down with my dad (co-signer as I was 18-1/2) to order my '69 Road Runner. There is still a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealership there and was the Plymouth dealer up until Plymouth was no more frown I have never seen Galen & Jones listed on any Mopar dealer listing with a dealer number but I think I have seen it listed somewhere and can't find it. I'm pretty sure it existed or am I getting too old to remember clearly? laugh2 Wait I found this photo and there it is shock grin smile
