Gator Grain on 70 Satellite

Gator Grain on 70 Satellite - 12/16/12 07:47 AM

Picked up a 70 Satellite parts car a few years ago and the vinyl top was mostly gone but enough of it still there to see it's a gator grain material. The fender tag and sheet were MIA but appears to be triple FK5 orange.
I've also got another 70 Sat that I've had for years and it has it's tag and BS intact. So I just got curious the other day and decoded it just for fun. Guess what, it's got V1G on the tag and BS. I never knew it was a gator grain car because it didn't have a vinyl top on it when I got it. The tag shows this one to be FF4, lime green metallic. Apparently someone removed it long ago and painted the top same as body color.

So was this a common option in 1970? I've read where the V1G indicates gator grain same as body coler which would be lime green in this case. And then other sources how V1G to be black gator grain. Anyone know which is correct?

Thanks

A V1G "gator grain" top was an OPTION and cost the same as a Black, White, or Green top in 1970 on a B or E-body. Chrysler Corp. didn't keep numbers (that survived publicly) by colors, but I'd "assume" V1G is the rarest of the 4 colors offered. The original color of a V1G top is brown with black veins running thru it, they turned black with age/exposure to sunlight (UV).

Black Gator Grain is simply INCORRECT!! - Most surviving original tops look like this - on my former '70 S/23 Fury FF4 V1G.

Re: Gator Grain on 70 Satellite - 12/16/12 08:17 AM

Wow I didn't realize there wasn't a black gator grain offered. So what about the FK5 car, was there no such thing as an orange gator grain? There isn't much left of the vinyl material left on that top but it appears orange. But of course it's so weathered it could have been the color of the material in your picture originally.

And I guess you're also saying the other source I mentioned where they say V1G is "gator grain vinyl - body color" is wrong too?

Correct - if you ordered V1G - you received the "brown" top in picture above.

Depending on the model, I may have the numbers of how many were built.

Definitely turned black on this one. What's left of it, that is.

The actual material was black, but it was dyed to achieve the marbled / mottled brown & black hues to look more natural.

Diego, 70 Satellite was the model I was thinking of. If you had those numbers that would be interesting to know. I just thought it kind of funny that these two old parts cars I picked up over the years would turn out to both be V1G.

Lol that's exactly how the top looks on my FK5 car, barely any of the material left.

I'd guess that's the fate of 99% of them

Haha, that is the photo that accompanied the ebay acution I won years back for my NOS top. One day it will get finished but there is a little problem with the flow of cash these days. Regardless, it WILL end up on this hemi orange Superbee some day.

And I still look forward to seeing the updates and the car someday. :-)

4.0% of V-8 Satellite hardtops built for the US were ordered with V1G.

I was getting kind of enthused about buying new vinyl for the FF4 car until I checked the price on Legendary's website. Ouch! $1295 for the V1G material vs only $185 for a regular boar grain top.

Yup, the brown washed out to black on my old '70.

There's an original GG E-body in these parts...

Vinyl definitely appears black...

This Challenger usually attends car show events in my area of central California. I have visited with the owner a couple times, the car is pretty much a survivor. The torque thrust wheels are vintage originals from the good ol days, not remakes. The Gator Top is original, but as is common it has the appearance of being either black or very dark brown.

Does it have a 383 Jeff? One of the members here has a broadcast sheet he found for an EW1 V1G V6X R/T SE with the 383.

Yes as I remember it is a 383 automatic with houndstooth interior. I thought I had other pictures of it but I'm not finding them right now.
Next chance to see the car is probably April, will get the VIN and a phone number and we'll see if the sheet actually matches the car.
