1971 CUDA RUBBER BUMPER (REAR)

1971 CUDA RUBBER BUMPER (REAR) - 12/07/12 09:50 PM

Hi, I thinking of switch out my rear chrome bumper and install a original rubber bumper for my 71 cuda.

Is there anything particular i should think about before i make a switch?

Special brackets for bumper,or anything else?

Im looking for a original rubber bumper because i imagine they should fit better than an repro from Gene Gregory..

Let my know your thoughts..

Re: 1971 CUDA RUBBER BUMPER (REAR) - 12/08/12 12:18 AM

the rear rubber bumper bolts straight on with the same brackets-only the fronts had unique brackets. good luck in finding a great original and what i`ve heard of the repro ones are not 100% like the factory ones.
i do like the look of rubber bumpers and they are a bolt on item so it doesn`t mess with things if you want it looking like the tag.
it also looks good with the chrome...
all the best
frank.

damn, nice cuda! Post some more pics please, what options does it have?

the repo rear rubber bumper from Gene Gregory is very nice, I think compared to an original it would be very hard to tell the difference once painted an installed.

Good luck finding an original if you are set on that. Even with a "mint" original, if it has seen any rain in it's life chances are the rear studs are starting to rust and separate from the core.

Can't tell you about the Cuda bumper but the Gene Gregory Challenger bumper is about 1.25" wider that an OE Elastomeric bumper... Taking a chop saw to both ends of aa brand new bumper is scary....

there was a thread not too long ago where someone had fittment issues with a repro rear rubber bumper on a cuda-he couldn`t get the ends tucked in enough because the thing was too wide-he had some close up pics of it and it just seemed to jut out at the wrong places. bottom line like most repro parts-we simply cannot make things like the factory did.

This is exactly what om talking about!

Will not try to cut a new bumper and then try to fix it up..Im sure i will make a mess with it

Don't forget........ you will need a different Jack Hook to keep everything correct.

Got a question pertaining to that. If you had only one rubber bumper, along with a chrome bumper, what hook did you get? #100 for chrome, #101 for rubber, or both?

I like both chrome and rubber bumber looks, but I prefered the chrome bumpers on my 71 so it would break up all the color front and rear especially with a color keyed grille.

I'd think you'd get the rubber bumper hook, you probably wouldn't want to use the metal bumper hook on the rubber bumper but vice versa would probably be fine - my I like the rubber bumper look front and back

Re: 1971 CUDA RUBBER BUMPER (REAR) - 12/29/12 05:15 AM

100 is a dart hook and replaced the ‘Cuda 101 (rubber or steel) when it was discontinued. This is listed in the 1970 parts book. Superseded parts are listed in the 70-71 parts book.

Re: 1971 CUDA RUBBER BUMPER (REAR) - 12/30/12 07:47 PM

Is there any kind of differences between 70 cuda rear rubber bumper and the 71 rubber bumpers?
Posted By: swapman

Re: 1971 CUDA RUBBER BUMPER (REAR) - 12/30/12 09:54 PM

I have both 70 and 71. I can't see any difference in the two rears. Nor should there be. The front repros from that gregory guy start out as all 71's. Then he cuts them down for the bigger valance opening of the 70.

If you must deal with him, be prepared for all kinds of delays, phone messages not returned and total indifference to you. This guy is a real piece of work. If I told you how I really feel, I would never be allowed on this site again.

Do you live near Hyylinge Sweden?
And that is a great looking car. Post some pics of the Swedish bikini team with the car

Re: 1971 CUDA RUBBER BUMPER (REAR) - 03/05/13 05:27 AM

Nicklas - NICE score!!!!! Short story: Back in 1979 I was living in Chicago area & my car was a F/R elastomeric '70 340 Cuda - I was working for the Chrysler parts depot (parts distribution center). My car got rear-ended in a chain-reaction wreck that a drunk guy caused. My car was the 3rd vehicle in the wreck & got smacked in the rear. The next day at work I met with one of the "parts specifiers" in the front offices to try & find another rubber bumper. THERE WERE NONE LEFT ANYWHERE NEW in the system! A year earlier, there had been a few stragglers left & the last dealer cost on them was a little over $300.00 each as I recall. So these suckers have been gone from Chrysler parts system since 1978.

Is Gene Gregory the ONLY one that makes these? I thought his were supposed to be spot-on! I've looked at them several times in the past & they looked perfect to me. I do need a front one for my AAR & pretty resigned to having to buy one of his. I'm going to use the chrome one for the rear.

Interesting that Chrysler shows no part number in their parts books for a primered rubber bumper, only the associated colors.
Here's an NOS one the way it left the depot with what remains of masking tape that held the thin plastic bag it shipped in, green paint dabs on all 4 stud ends.
It was bought brand new from Dale Tuel, Spring Carlisle 1978.

Well you better get to "ponying up" the coin if you want a Gene Gregory bumper, Gene's health hasn't gotten any better, I hear he's cleaning house on parts in stock, his shop/business last I heard is up for sale...his daughter was assisting him with making the urethane bumpers for E and B bodied cars, whether she continues with the "program" is anybodies guess...Just because it's reproed, doesn't always mean it's going to be available

How do you get a hold of him to order some rubber bumpers? Do any of the fiberglass companies make good versions? I see Stringer (AAR) has one but it is a 70 model.

Yes Gean has been trying to unload operations and move to the sunny south.
As stated his bumpers are a real nice reproduction, the front being distinguishable from real if you look close.
The rear is almost undetectable.....almost.
Both his Challenger and Cuda bumpers come in black primer.

Don't be to quick to dismiss the reproduction rear Elastomeric bumpers from Gene. I like them. They fit well without any adjustments.

If you would like the "as recieved from Gene" pictures, I can up load them. To compare them to the, in the box NOS one that Nicklas has.

I bought and picked up a shaker hood from Gene last weekend. I was not aware of any health issues. He seemed fine, he is up in age though. He toured me around his shop and I enjoyed talking with him. I think his products are of good quality. The bumpers I saw in his shop looked very nice. I am happy with the items I purchased. His daughter is listing his items on ebay, where I made contact. Phone numbers were exchanged and I had good communication with Gene throughout my transaction. Was a positive experience for me.

Finally the NOS rubber bumper i bought early this year is painted and ready to be mounted on the car! Everything seems to take twice the time..The bumper went to painter in mars. More pictures will follow when all is mounted.

Thanks
