Superbird Headlight Door Vaccum Switch - 09/23/12 09:47 PM

I need to replace the headlight door vacuum switch on my Superbird. Has anyone had any experience with the reproduction parts? Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I have an original vacuum switch. This is the white plastic one that attaches to the headlight switch. PM me if you are interested. Joe

If it like the 70 air grabber switches, I can repair the broken nubs.

Handmade with metal inserts.

The nubs are fine, it will not hold vacuum, the seal is apparently worn out.

They use a light coat of grease on the slider,it dries with age and won't seal.If you are careful you can take the switch apart, clean it and use a good quality grease. You can take it apart and put it back together with a little common sense, did mine years ago and it still works. Also, there are a lot of sources for leaks on that system, hoses, check valve in reserve can and headlight actuators.Get a hand vacuum pump and eliminate them one at a time.

I checked each part, using a hand vacuum pump and a vacuum gauge and checked each part individually and each vacuum line. The check valve in the canister works. Took the headlight switch out over the weekend and checked, it will not hold vacuum in any position.

As for disassemble, looks like I can use a dremal and carefully drill the heat stakes out to take the switch apart. What type of glue did you use to reattach the cover?

I used a clear two part epoxy but been long enough I haven't a clue what it was,JB Weld would probably work but I doubt you would get it apart again or you could use the tip of a soldering pencil if you don't get carried away. .

DO NOT USE GREASE! It is not good for the rubber and will separate into oil and a mucky solid.

You need rubber safe lube like 3M o-ring lube.

Some disk break pin lube is also rubber safe.
