Correct ECU mount on firewall for 1971 Challenger R/T

Correct ECU mount on firewall for 1971 Challenger R/T - 09/12/12 08:51 PM

Is the ECU supposed to be mounted directly to the firewall or attached to a raised bracket on a 1971 Challenger R/T.

My car appears to have the holes to mount the ECU directly to the firewall but in researching some other 71 Challengers the ECU appears to be mounted both ways.
Is this a production date thing or is one right or wrong?

Thanks.

On a bracket .

Is it an original ECU car ?

I don't think electronic became avial till mid year and even then only on certain engines

Hmm....the car has a June 16 SPD and currently has the electronic iginition wiring harness.
Original 383 4 speed car, was that a 340 engine only thing?
Would it be listed on my build sheet?

I thought it was 340 only in 71.

I thought 340 only for elec.ig., didn't think the bracket came in until late 71 - for the 72 models...

OK that makes sense.

That's why the spare bracket I tried to test fit with the ECU didn't line up to any holes on the firewall.

The car must have came originally came with points ignition and was converted to electronic at some time.

At least they didn't drill any new holes in the firewall for the bracket.

For a '71 Challenger R/T (or non-R/T), the electronic ignition was available only with the 340, and late in the model year (around March of 1970 IIRC - roughly around the time of the switch to blue engines)

The ECU would mount to a metal bracket on the firewall to the left of the voltage regulator

I have found that mounting the ECU to the underside of the battery tray works well. It's out of sight, gets good airflow to keep cool and it's easy to disguise/hide the wires with the factory harnesses.

I can't answer that one. I'm not that familiar with 71 E bodies .

I talked to a guy in the mid-west ( Kansas, or MO area maybe???? ) probably 30 years ago that had a 1971 Hemi Challenger he bought new. And If I remember right he said it came with electronic ignition system.

There are numbers for an electronic distributor for a 1971 Hemi Engine. I have never come across a 1971 Hemi E Body that received such a thing.

GTX 69/70 did you happen to take pictues of this said 1971 Hemi Challenger or do you know the serial number of the car or even what color the car was. I have looked at the last three 1971 Hemi Challengers built and none have the electronic system in the car. All these 1971 Hemi Challengers are June built cars.
