'67 big block dual snorkel air cleaner I.D.

'67 big block dual snorkel air cleaner I.D. - 08/31/12 09:00 PM

I just scored a '67 dual snorkel air cleaner. It has the original base which fits AVS type Carter… at least it appears and was reported to be the original base - sure looks like it is.

Anyway, what is the deal with '67 b-body air cleaners? I have had one other '67 dual snorkel air cleaner as well which was just the same and had an AVS base on it. It has the right indents and indent positions etc however it and my current assembly are 18" across vs 17" typically found on '68 and '69 type dual snorkels.

I have heard different things…. Did big block C-Body cars use the same overall looking air cleaner in '67 but with an 18" dia and a larger throat base? Did b-body big blocks look the same except with a 17" diameter and an AFB base? Or…... did they both use this 18" type? If so, why would the bases fit AVS? I know they did not use AVS's until 1968 and the AFB cutout is smaller in diameter. Like I said, both of the units I have had would fit an AVS.

Is there such a thing as a 17" 67 big block dual snorkel with an AFB sized base?

I have also have this question out to Nick at Nicks Garage. His site shows what appears to be two different parts with the same overall look. Can't be determined if one is smaller in diameter that the other or what the base diameter is of each.

My 67 GTX came with the 18" round air cleaner so I cannot answer your question about the diameters, but the carburator opening in the baseplate should measure 4-1/4 inches in diameter for the AFB carburator. AVS carbs were not used in 1967 to the best of my knowledge.

You are correct , 68 was first year for the AVS and the 68 base will fit the 67 top.

I agree. Seems weird that both my 18" '67 dual snorkels would have a base with the larger dia cutout. Doesn't make any sense since most if not all follow on dual snorkel applications (68 up) appear to use 17 inch diameter dual snorkel air cleaners and bases. What air cleaner would use an 18 inch base with an AVS sized cutout....hmmmm.

John
The '68 base (and '69) does not fit on the '67. They are different diameters. '68 has a 17 inch outer diameter and '67 an 18 inch outer diameter. I don't know at this point where 18 inch air cleaner bases with AVS sized cutouts would have been used. Anybody know the answer to this?

John,

Right you are as usual. I ran an AVS on my 67 GTX until I could find the correct AFB and the AVS - AFB baseplates in this case were interchangable.

Here is the air cleaner in question. The AVS base wouldn't be original as this is definitely the '67 GTX-R/T air cleaner.

I'll have to measure my '68 Barracuda unsilenced one as it is the same as the '67 GTX shape but of course uses an AVS base.

Another thought is that the 361-383 2V base has the same opening as the AFB but I don't know the diameter of the air cleaners overall compared to a 4-bbl one.

I measured my '68 383-S air cleaner and it is 18" across.

Anyone have a big block 2-bbl air cleaner they can measure?

Weren't some of the '67 air cleaners and/or the bases left over and then used on early '68 models? I don't know about the different carb openings though.

Yes, on the unsilenced ones. They used the big one for a while in 1968 until they came out with the smaller version that was also used in 1969. The base plate changed to fit the larger AVS carburetor.

Can someone with a '68 and '69 dual snorkel measure the outside diameter?

17 inches.

Thanks.

Also, do any '67 cars come with a 4-bbl carb that isn't a Carter AFB?

Answer: Not according to the service manual. Additionally, I have never seen any.

Scott @ Harms will know more I am sure.

According to this article, c-body 440's did.

I guess it could be true. But they are not listed in the Chrysler Service Manual I have.

Not too sure about that, but 1968 California cars used the 67 air cleaners for N97 noise reduction requirements. (and turned down exhaust tips)

BS - continued bad info & rumors.

What proof does anyone have that (and turned down exhaust tips) was an issue on anythig other than '70 HEMI b-bodies and '70-'71 440+6 & HEMI e-bodies?

Here's a period road test showing a '67 Imperial with the air cleaner off and a Holley carb is there. http://www.imperialclub.com/Articles/67Comfort/index.htm

This 1985 article one shows the single snorkel air cleaner with pie tin. Page 5. http://www.imperialclub.com/Articles/67NotChrysler/index.htm

Re: '67 big block dual snorkel air cleaner I.D. - 09/05/12 10:20 AM

So, I figured, I'll look thru the '67 Parts Catalog & find the answer - WRONG!!

CARBURETOR 14-30-1
The 440 (non-HP) with C.A.P. c-body & Imperial carb was a Carter AFB.
The 440 (non-HP) w/o C.A.P. c-body & Imperial carb was a HOLLEY.

All other 383/440 4bbl engines are Carter AFB.

Air Cleaner FILTER 14-29-6
all 383/440 with C.A.P. = 2463 985 also in '66 Catalog
all 383/440 w/o C.A.P. = 2402 677 also in '66, '68 & '69 Catalogs

Air Cleaner Base RETAINER 14-29-9
a-body 383 (no snorkel) = 2463 959
b-body 440HP (no snorkel) = 2863 992
b & c-body 440HP (2 snorkels) = 2899 410
c-body & Imp 440 (non-HP) with C.A.P. = 2806 332
c-body & Imp 440 (non-HP) w/o C.A.P. = 2843 058 also in '68 Catalog

* for some reason they list all 383s as part #2402 678 (no 2bbl/4bbl difference)

Air Cleaner Lid COVER 14-29-7 14 different BB part numbers
let's try 440 (all part numbers listed are 440 ONLY)
b-body 440HP (no snorkel) = 2863 986
b & c-body 440HP with C.A.P.(2 snorkels) = 2843 068
b & c-body 440HP w/o C.A.P.(2 snorkels) = 2843 069
c-body 440 Station Wagon & Police with C.A.P. (2 snorkels) = 2843 053 also in '68 Catalog
c-body 440 Station Wagon & Police w/o C.A.P. (2 snorkels) = 2843 055
c-body & Imp with C.A.P. (single snorkel) = 2806 320 also in '68 Catalog
c-body & Imp w/o C.A.P. (single snorkel) = 2806 318

Since the RETAINER, COVER, & FILTER are affected by C.A.P., I believe there is a difference other than the breather hose. filter seat diameter/height?

I'll check the '66 & '68 catalogs to see which parts were used elsewhere. the '66 catalog lists most of the air cleaners as assemblies

Re: '67 big block dual snorkel air cleaner I.D. - 09/05/12 10:37 AM

Air Cleaner FILTER 14-29-6
all 383/440 with C.A.P. = 2463 985
all 383/440 w/o C.A.P. = 2402 677

The current FRAM cross-reference shows CA127 for both.

This drawing is from Nick's site, do these dimensions match the filter seats on both lids & bases of the air cleaners in question?

The big block 2bbl carb has the same diameter air cleaner flange as the AFB. That would explain the same base being used.

And yes, the parts books can lead to more confusion at times.
