Dash Lights - 08/07/12 01:18 PM

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem with the dash/dome lights on a 73 Cuda. Mine arent working right now and I have changed out the dimmer switch now the dome light works but still no dash lights. Can it be a headlight switch?

Check the Black and Black w/Yellow tracer wire coming into the dimmer switch to ground. If you have 12VDC there and no dash lights, it's the dimmer switch. The dome light can still work from the dimmer switch and not the dash lights.

Check the rheostat on the back, mine did that, and the wire was broke. You can work a little solder in there to make the connection.

In addition to the above, check the lower bottom far left pod retainer screw. The switch pod retainer plate grounds the pod to the dash frame from that screw.

The dimmer switch has (3) connections, (2) are through the rheostadt to vary the dash lite voltage 6-12V. And the (1) is for grounding for turning on the Dome lite. Pull off the 3-wire connector see if there is 12V there when the headlites are turned ON. Most of the dash lite problems are due to a dirty rheostadt, a good solution is to simply jumper this..
Since the dash lites are that bright to begin with. This can be done with a simple jumper wire lead in the connector. Then run a second wire back for the Dome lite grounding terminal.
