Engine Compartment and New motor for 67 R/T Ragtop - 07/30/12 01:19 PM

Well I finally got my new 67 440HP motor installed, engine compartment painted and a few other things done. Never had $$ to do it when had original paint done. Yes, I know. The belt is a generic one and I need to do the wiper motor (Jules is in my future). Fender tag in my wallet right now. What stands out that needs to be done still? Not looking for factory exact, but maybe immediate improvement.

Good news it with 100 miles it withstood a traffic jam threw Harpers Ferry, WV yesterday in 90 degree heat and held 195°. Then found that it is now ripping second gear with a takeaway in drive. Sweet.

Bad news is I was told not to take down new ragtop for two more weeks to stretch it. Is this normal??

Thanks, Yeah, may geet one of those silly covers for it as I was in rush to get it back when battery died. It has been gone since Apr 11 for this work. Bodyguy had a personal tragedy and I gave him some leeway working thru his issues. Great guy and does great work. Still things undone, but happy to have it back for what is left of summer.

Keep pointing out things.

The things that jump out to me are: ignition wires, looms, battery, belt, oil breather, incorrect master cylinder and also the master should be black as they were painted with the booster. Everything else look nice and clean.

Also looks like a 68 and later style washer bottle? Alternator stator ring should be natural bare steel with a brownish clear coat laquer coating (not black or red as painted many are). Exhaust manifolds were painted with the engine and most burned away, etc.

Not trying to be a critic, just helpful, car looks beautiful!

Wrong bolt on the upper alternator mount , bolts holding the thermo housing should be engine color ...

Guys, this is what I asked for. Guy wanted to do all of that stuff, but we had to stop due to personal circumstances. He did an R/T that won Carlisle in 2009, so he knows how it should be. I want to know as I may be doing these things myself and I wanted to tap this wonderful resouece.

if it was mine i would remove stickers from battery, replace the belts, and at least get black plug wires.

I think Carlisle did have a real judged show at one point, not just peoples choice.

Rather than use a cheap cover, buy a MOPAR repro battery (Mancini). They are dry cell like Ultima and although expensive, mine deos a great job. Wires and looms yes. Stay away from "production" fan belt repros. Mine would not stay on pulley. Aftermarket will keep you from being stranded with overheated Motor. Pic is my 66 Coronet convertable. And yes, you need to keep the top stretched for a couple of weeks. Park it in the sun for a few hours will help the top take a "set".

For now I will take off the stickers. I like the look of the Mancini battery, but will probably keep belts after that story. We have had so many clouds lately it is hard to find sun.
The good thing is that the Carlisle car is an original owner car that has retained all orig parts, and it is there for a reference. My next pick-up are the uncut rear convertible interior panels and the 4327s carb.

I've seen several cars with boosters that remained yellow cad. Did it vary by plant?

No, not with that style booster, they were all painted black with the booster as an assembly, it's a (very) common restoration mistake to detail and paint the master cyl cast iron grey wit the unpainted gold cad lid.

When I got this car it was plumbed for the master cylinder on the wrong side. Not knowing, I ordered the correct replacement. Obviously it has the holes on the wrong side. Not able to do the lines at the time, I just ordered the generic Cardone replacement with holes on both sides. It has the right shape.

My car came stock with factory discs. I switched to the MP Brakes kit because my calipers were leaking and I couldn't find anyone to rebuild them at the time (4 years ago), plus pads are easier to get for the A body style brakes. Still have original stuff in garage. Bendix?

Yep, didn't look at the picture closely enough. The disc brake booster is different than the Midland-Ross power drum booster. Not trying to hijack the post, but what is the correct installed finish for the drum booster? As I mentioned, I've seen several that were still wearing the original yellow CAD.

Thanks for the compliments. I would love a silver B-body. And would take a 4spd over my column auto. This thing cruises like a Caddy though. Real easy to drive.

I still have to do the interior, but everything else has been touched. I left the factory undercoating, which saved the car. A Wisconsin cars without one patch in orig. floors and trunk. Silly.

I am not sure about the brakes, but there is a stock, one owner 67 GTX around here with a gold MC. Owner says it is orig., but that is hard to believe that he just kept rebuilding it all these years.

I am chasing a miss in my new motor. Wires seem square. Will get my distributor recurved by Don at FBO, but I think the new paint in engine compartment may have led to a poor ground for chrome ECU hid under battery.

As regards you "miss", Definately make shure you have a good ground on not only the chrome box, but ANYTHING that grounds to the engine bay after paint. My car did fine after assembly, at first. Then, miles from home, it refused to start. After chasing my tail for several weeks, I put a jumper wire from neg batt to solenoid and WALA! Lesson learned, ALWAYS use star washers beween freshly painted surfaces and ANYTHING that requires a ground.

So I added a few wire looms and ran a ground wire from ECU mounting screw to - wire on battery and the miss is gone. Next step to send distributor to FBO for a recurve and get correct 4327s Carter restored.

Does anyone reading this kow the best place to by the choke control that is mounted in the intake (for the orig. carb?)

If you have your original choke I can restore it as well as the carb, no extra cost for the choke.

Thanks for the advice. My guy did use those, but when re-mounting the ECU it was put right against the inner fender with no spacer and just screws. I don't think it got good contact, for some reason. Or else the issue was my wires.

Off topic, my car looks like a glorified Hot Wheel, whereas your car looks SINISTER! I like having 15" magnum 500s and redlines, but it almost takes attention away from the car. I hate the stock 67 wheels so not sure what to do there.

It will be coming your way. Can you work with this? Will it work ok in hot climate? I have no room for spacer with stock air cleaner.

Yes, not a problem.....I've worked with a lot worse!

Should run just fine in your climate built to stock specs. Be careful packing it, I raccomend double boxing as it's metal but it's cast metal and will break if slammed against something hard. BTW that tag looks like a couple more bends and it will break off.

Will do. I ship a lot of stuff and have plenty of bubble wrap. What gaskets are recommended to go back on with the Carter? Is there some Bakelite thing?
