65 Coronet 426 Wedge 4-speed Dash question - 07/27/12 09:15 PM

I have a 65 coronet 500 convertible with a factory 426 wedge 4-speed. The dash on the left side between the parking brake release knob and the wiper switch is a factory looking 3/8" hole. My friend has a 65 Coronet with factory 426 Wedge & 4-speed and his also has the same hole in the dash. What is it for? Factory Manual Choke? Any advice would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Emergency (parking) brake light. Should be a red lens that protrudes about 1/2 inch from the dash. When the brake is on, the light is on.
This is the situation in my Coronet 500 that was an automatic (now a 4-speed), but I also remember the light in an original 65 426 street wedge car with 4-speed that I bought new. I remember it because when you parked with the e-brake on and left the key on for the radio (not that anyone ever did that), the red light was on. This wasn't a big deal from the back seat - and with front buckets and a console, you HAD to use the back seat. Ah...the good ole days.

Sorry - bad information. The e-brake light is actually below the e-brake release, not between it and the wiper switch. Just got home from work and checked - my 500 does not have a hole between the e-brake release and the wiper switch. So, I don't know what the hole is in your dash. But, I DO remember that there was not a manual choke located there with the 426 street wedge 4-speed cars. I checked the original owners manual that came with my 500, and the dash picture dies not show anything between the e-brake release and wiper switch. I also looked in an original 65 shop manual, and it shows nothing. So, I'm baffled what the hole in your dash can be. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

On my 64, the middle hole is for the headlight switch. The 65 dash is quite similar, except that the headlight switch was moved to where the transmission pushbuttons were in 64 (no pushbuttons in 65), and there are only two knobs in that part of the dash shown in the 65 Coronet dealer brochure. Unless maybe someone switched to a 64 dash frame some time in the last 50 years, don't know what the middle hole in your dash would be, but 426 street wedges had automatic chokes, so it wouldn't have been for a manual choke cable.

Sorry I'm not much help, but I look forward to seeing the correct answer.

If you Google dash pics there isn't a single example with that hole but that is the common location for the choke on cars equipped with it.

Is that hole in the dash for an optional inside hood release?
