Ford Type F Transmision Fluid in my 727? - 11/01/08 06:02 PM

Read a post about this a few months ago and wanted additional confirmation before I fill torque converter snd bolt up transmision to engine? I think 62Maxwgn said that it improves HP shift quality. Can anyone chime in to confirm?

If starting with a new dry trans then fill with Type F,
I was told it is better than Dextron, better on clutches.

Just put a new(er) 727 in my road runner and someone that has a lot of F.A.S.T. experience filled it with Type F and WOW! does it shift "crisp". Back in the late '70's - early '80's we used Type F in our race (dirt) bikes (wet clutches) because Type F had less friction modifiers (to get the Ford auto trans to shift more crisply compared to GM, Chrysler from what I was told) so I guess when you use it in a 727 it makes it shift even more crisp........I have to agree that is sure seems like it does. It chirps the tires even at low shift points now Only one problem with more crisp shifts.....the wife is not so impressed with how un-smooth it is compared to the Town and Country

Way better friction coefficient--whatever that means--I have always used it and man! There is a difference! NAPA brand is Valvoline and good! Stay with a good brand and you will love it--the very new stuff is different ( stuff for new cars) I would avoid it and go with plain ole Napa F.

If I may, whats the best way to fill one for the first time after a rebuild. I put two quarts in the converter before I installed it, which is what the manual seemed to imply. How much more should I put in before fire up?

I'd at the least pour another 3-3-1/2 qts in the dip stick tube, start it, put the emergency brake on and trans in neutral. Let it run for a minute or three and check it. I put a deep pan (Mopar Performance) on and I think it took about 6+ qts maybe 8 qts.....I was chasing a filler tube and shift arm (tower) leak and I think a pan gasket leak and lost count. I have about 12-15 empty quart bottles of Castrol Type F in the trash because I didn't reuse the stuff I poured out (or leaked out ) chasing the leaks. The tower seal and dip stick tube O-Ring were a pain in the.....and I finally went with one of the new thick, metal reinforced pan gaskets when I put the deep pan on. No leaks now

I know it will take at the least 4 to maybe 6+ qts total if it was empty including the torque converter. Oh, and I put new stainless steel cooler line on too so that adds just a little to the total

With a stock pan I would put an additional 6 quarts in the trans and have more on hand to top it off as the pump sucks it up and circulates it.

Be sure to start with the shifter in Neutral (not Park) and it's best to have the rear end off the ground to allow the wheels to turn freely (helps circulate the fluid throughout)

That's just what I'll do.
