Year One Fuel Tank - 05/21/08 09:11 PM

I recently recieved my fuel tank (along with a bunch of other stuff) from Year One and besides the fact it was dented (only protected by two layers of cardboard) I was dissappointed that it is painted silver rather than zinc plated like the originals.

Does anyone know if someone makes a better reproduction with the proper finish?

Thanks

Re: Year One Fuel Tank - 05/22/08 01:48 AM

Dave,
For the longest time the tanks were made by Spectra (or something close) in Hamilton Ontario.
Phone around your local radiator/gas tank shops and price them out. You can also try the jobbers like NAPA, Canadian Tire etc. They will all have a listing, ask who makes them and see if someone will order you one so you can see it in person before you buy. I think the last one I bought was right around $200.
Good luck,
Dave

Try these guys: Auto City Classic, Inc in Isanti, Mn

www.autocityclassic.com

They have great parts and great customer service. I saw them at a show and orderd my gas tank and sending unit. Both arrived without a scratch!

Re: Year One Fuel Tank - 05/22/08 04:08 AM

Once again Year One is buying the cheapest parts they can to take care of their overhead. They did the same thing with interiors when they quit using Legendary. I still cant understand why people buy anything from Year One except wiring harnesses?? Any Goodmark dealer can get you the correct gas tank!

Spectra Premium also uses Car Quest as a distributor for their products.

I was in need of a fuel sending unit for my car and was looking all over so I could have one for a certain weekend. Spoke to the folks at Spectra Premium and they told me to check with Car Quest, who ordered one in from the warehouse and I had it the next day.

Call your local Car Quest guy and ask them to order one in for you from Spectra.

Re: Year One Fuel Tank - 05/22/08 03:03 PM

Thanks for the responses. I'll try to get a Spectra tank. Figures; I spent $185.49 on the tank, over $200.00 in shipping and another $200.00 plus in Duty (for a $1700.00 order). Not worth the effort to send back and no sense complaining to YO about the dent as I don't want another painted tank. Oh well, I guess someone from the club gets a freebee.

Cheers,
Dave

Dave

A suggestion. Take a couple of pictures and call YO and tell them the way it was received, and you want your money back and they can pickup the old one at their expense if they want it. If you do not get any satisfaction, ask to speak with Kevin King, I am sure he will make things right. At least you should get your 185.00 back

That's good advice and that's what I SHOULD do, but honestly, it took me forever to find the time just to order this stuff and (I know how it sounds) I really have to weigh out how much time I spend fighting over $185.00 when I'm soooo busy. $$$'s for $$$'s, my time is better spent on work stuff and i give the tank to someone who needs one and isn't so concerned about originality.

Just an update;

I found the part number on the Spectra Premium website. They won't sell direct, but Lordco (our local jobber) sells thier products. They have one in stock and it will be delivered to my office tomorrow.........$ 665.89 plus taxes.

...........if it isn't perfect, it's goin' back.

I realize you may not want to spend too much or any time at all with this matter but you'd be surprised at the high level of Customer Service that YO offers.

There may be a chance that they'll tell you to simply scrap the tank and refund your money to your credit card.

A couple years back they sent me a wiring harness for a '71 Charger instead of a '69 and they sent a replacement and told me to keep the other.

I don't know how Lordco can justify that price for a part that is made and therefore shipped in Canada. I imagine your tired of shipping and customs etc, but hear is another option for the Spectra tank:

Dave, if money is not an issue I'd say continue on as planned. But I just bought a Spectra tank fo my B body from Rock Auto and it cost $157. They even gave me a 5 percent discount for being a moparts member.

Acccording to their website, they have on in stock in Vancouver for a lot less that Lordco.

Re: Year One Fuel Tank - 05/22/08 06:24 PM

Your right guys, the price IS nuts. Buying one on E-bay, waiting for it to arrive in a month and finding out that it's dented or the finish isn't correct isn't something I'm prepared to deal with.

One of my Mopar buddies had a "discussion" with Spectra on why the tank (made in Canada) can be purchased through Summit for half the price as their Canadian distributors, but (big surprise) they didn't much care.

By the time I deal with the shipping and duty again, I'd eat up most of the savings anyway. I'm certainly paying for the convenience, but it will be hand delivered to me in my office tomorrow.

....patience isn't one of my virtues and it's lack is an expensive character flaw on occassion.

I will try to talk to Year One out of general principle and I'll let you know how that goes.

Gary, that's a small dent compared to mine!

Re: Year One Fuel Tank - 05/22/08 08:35 PM

OK, the plot thickens;

The tank I rec'd from Year One has another box inside the YO box and it has a part number on it # CCR9C. The Spectra part number I ordered from Lordco is CR9C and that's too close for comfort as I now suspect that the YO tank came from Spectra.

A call into Spectra yielded nothing useful other than an assurance that thier tanks are "high end".

I guess I'll find out tomorrow but if I just paid over $600.00 for the same tank I got from YO for $185.00, I'm going to be annoyed.

*Sigh* nothing is ever easy in this hobby!

Dave the One Cross Canada Sells will be identical to the one from Year One. I am pretty Sure Cross Canada and Sherman Parts are basically the same company and Sherman sell the overseas gas tanks. Spectra sells the best gas tank out there. So you should be happy with that one.

Alright, Update:

The good news: the Spectra tank is the proper finish and looks very nice. It also arrived with no damage.

The Bad news: They sent me a CR9A rather than a CR9C. The "A" is for a Charger as it has the side filler opening.....

Re: Year One Fuel Tank - 05/26/08 04:35 PM

Update: Recieved tank #3 this morning. Correct part number CR9C......(drumroll please).....it is IDENTICAL to the painted silver tank I recieved from Year One. It even has the two ECS nipples. It seems when you order it withough California Emmissions, you get two rubber plugs! Funny, the second tank (CR9A - Charger tank) with the right finish had no ECS tubes and used different construction methods for the welds. Both painted tanks, the one from YO and the one from Spectra used a radius weld on the corner pinches. I should post some pics.

So to recap then: $ 1,515.00 so far and still no decent fuel tank. I'll keep you posted.

.......next time I'll buy a car that someone ELSE had to restore!

Last pic tank #3. Note same welded seam as tank #1. Slight fold in shipping, but I could straighten.

Posted By: DPelletier

Re: Year One Fuel Tank - 05/26/08 06:48 PM

To summarize;

- All tanks and thier accessories say Made in Canada on them. All of the grommets/accessories use the same part number. Part numbers on the tanks are very similar (CCR9C, CR9A (Charger), CR9C)

- I believe all the tanks were made by Spectra

- Tank #1 and tank #3 are identical except for the dent and $480.00! . Neither are acceptable, primarily due to the painted finish. Paying $665.00 for a gas tank is bad enough, but it ain't gonna happen for one with a spray bomb silver paint job.

I will keep you all posted in case this helps anyone else.

Cheers,
Dave

Not on the two that I have; they are clearly painted silver. You can see in the pics that the spot welds and pinch welds are painted as are the rubber ECS plugs! Night and day compared to the Charger tank.

Re: Year One Fuel Tank - 05/27/08 03:23 PM

That one looks good. It makes you wonder about the seam, 'cause the two that were correct in this thread both had the overlapped pinchwelds rather than the radius ones.......

Re: Year One Fuel Tank - 05/27/08 08:46 PM

Alright: UPDATE

I just recieved tank #4. It IS the right tank AND it has the correct finish. Only minor problems are the ECS nipples and some bending of the flanges at the corners.

So I finally have a tank that is satisfactory that I can use. Yes, it did cost me $685.00

This latest tank is IDENTICAL in all construction details to the CR9A tank sent previously (excepting the Charger filler location obviously).

I believe that ALL FOUR tanks were made by Spectra Premium;

- they all have a Made In Canada sticker

- They all have similar/identical part numbers

- the accessory grommets are all stamped "Made In Canada" and all have the same LO06 part number.

It would appear to me that they have two lines: a budget one and a more correct one. The budget line is characterized by the painted finish, raised numbers stamped into the top and the radius corner welds. The more correct one is raw metal/galvanized finish, has the square, overlapping corner welds and has the identifying information on a sticker with no stamped numbers on the tank.

........only problem is that these two are being used interchangeably. They probably don't think most people care.

my guess is perhaps the two different manufacturing techniques are a result of being made in different locations.

OK guys, pics as promised;

1st tank from YO;

Note painted finish, ECS nipples (I assume)

Dave, those are vent nipples. ECS would also include 4 more nipples on the flat area on the right side of the picture.

Perhaps, or maybe there was a change in the manufacturing process and one type is newer than the other.

Thanks Ken!

I was hoping someone could confirm what those nipples were for. That's great news. One puzzling thing is that the Charger tank ( CR9A ) didn't have the nipples.

I don't mean to hijack, but if a car has a functional, original, non-leaking tank should they be replaced?

Technically, no...but....

More often than not the appearance looks crappy, even if the integrity of the tank is sound. In the case of a car like Dave's, which is an "all out" rotisserie restoration, then a weathered, dented, original tank just isn't appropriate.

In my case, not only was the tank dented and weathered, it also was severely rusty inside (I was actually able to pour out a quantity of scale!). With all new fuel lines, pump, carbs, etc. I wanted to ensure that the entire fuel system was new and clean.

Yup, those are the nipples for the tanks vents.
