1968 Road Runner decor package - 05/12/12 04:26 PM

Hi,

does someone know at which date the optional decor package (code 360) got available on the 68 Road Runner coupes? The Hardtop models were introduced in december 1967 and I am sure that the decor package got at least available at the same time, too. But the 68 mid size brochure doesn't show/mention it at all (print date 9/67). The 1968 Plymouth "color and trim" selector which is scanned and shown on hamtramck-historical doesn't show the optional vinyl seatcover for Satellites and RRs (with decor package).

Right about the same time; IIRC one of the RR hardtop ads mentioned the coupe Decor Group. I don't know an exact date, always figured it as late-Dec/early Jan. The brochures were printed well before the HT and Decor were added, so they make no mention of them, and I don't recall that they ever updated that on the '68 catalog. The '68 RR Decor interior was the same as the all-vinyl Satellite HT interior; no cloth or bucket seat options for the '68 RR.

Is this the ad you are thinking of? See http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/vintage-advertising/1968/1968_g.jpg

Actually, no; I was thinking of the ad with a photo of a yellow RR on a reddish background. The ad you have there is an updated version of the original cartoon ad, which I have on the garage wall behind my RR. The copy I have doesn't mention the HT or Decor Group, and it was in the magazines right around intro time for the '68s. Could be that they updated more of their ads, too.

I have a question about the decor package.... My car has the decor package with green interior. What color should the top part of the doors be, above the door panel? Green, or black? I've heard and read that both are correct??

Dark green and right now I forget the name of that green, (catawa or something like that....or was that the dash color ) my '68 road runner had a green interior and the tops of the doors were dark green.

A12: yeah, that's the ad, though the one you posted doesn't call out the Decor Group specifically or mention its availability on the Coupe. I don't know if they updated the text later.
I have a '68 Chrysler & Imperial color chart: "Catawba Green" is the suede dash color name, Ditzler # 43721. Unfortunately my chart doesn't list the door/quarter metal color (not used on C-bodies) though it says Velvet Green 43137 & Avocado Green 43691 for various low-gloss interior trim. I can't find my full Dodge/Plymouth color chart, dang it.

Haha - fair 'nuff.
Yeah, yours are what I remember from my neighbor's '68 RR, almost the '69 F8, though that code didn't exist on the '68s.
My '68s were/are either black, black/silver, or burgundy, and I think different door/quarter colors from my green '69, though I could be wrong there. If it's the same color, I should have codes handy.
Hey, chip some off of your door and get us a current code, OK?

F5 is a '69 color.....thought you were talking about a '68 road runner?

My '68 was FF1 and I think something in '68 that was closer to '69 F5 would have been TT1 but that was still lighter than F5 Limelight green IMO

Yeah, you're correct...... F5 is a 69 color. I like that much better than the original TT1 color. I decided to go with F5 just cause I like it.

No build sheet, but the fender tag says H4F.

What is the letter under the letter U in UBS ? that is your upper door color.

H4F is High grade vinyl bench seat in green , not sure if that is two tone or not though.

G (aka GG1 Forest Green Poly), is Ditzler # 43649.
RE: Earlier mention of the Decor seat colors, all but black or white would be 2-tone seat covers (blue, burgundy, green gold). Actually the base seat covers were 2-tone as well (silver/black, blue tan/brown).

Re: 1968 Road Runner decor package - 05/17/12 05:17 PM

nobody makes the correct two tone green seat covers.....my original rear seat cover was dark green on the top, I know this was correct because I found three more originals that were also dark green on the top....but not the Legendary reproductions I don't know about the front bench seat tops on the '68 decor interior if they were supposed to be dark green on the top but I would assume so...mine was gone and front bench seats were hard to find and especially with the an original green cover.

Re: 1968 Road Runner decor package - 05/17/12 09:23 PM

A12, not sure what you mean there. Granted, the repro dye lots are sometimes way off, but the inserts ran up over the top on '68-'69 Satellite vinyl/RR Decor covers. The seat material was thin, though, and it was common within a short period of time for the material to split (neighbor's car for example) and a replacement panel sewed in all the way across.
