Convert 1971-74 B&E Body Bucket Seats to 1970 Cuda use? - 03/12/12 04:16 AM

Are there any big obstacles to using 1971 thru 1974 B or E Body bucket seat cores to redo as 1970 'Cuda seats. Assume that the correct 1970 seat covers, seat backs, seat foam sets, and seat hinge side covers would be used. Essentially, only the metal seat structure would be utilized from the later model car. Are there any year model differences in this seat structure assembly?

I know 71 works, I think they went to a push button seat back release around 73..

Thanks Randy, that opens up options a fair amount. I have a seat with a bent seat back frame, but only have a later model set of spare seat cores (not sure of year model).

The later seat backs have the covers attached to springs built into the foam. The 70 and maybe 71 have the springs build as part of the frame. So your talking different foam and attachment points for the wires in the covers to pull them tight in the center area. Basically if you look at a bare 70 seat, its not just an open frame like the later ones. The bottoms you can use, but the backs are definetly different.

Thanks... Sounds like I am limited to 1970 & 1971 seat cores that have the hard plastic seat backs. The 1972 thru 1974 seats have the soft padded vinyl seat backs IIRC...

When I said seat backs I meant the seat frame itself, the top seat frame and not the back cover... as far as the back cover, I'm not sure how they attach different. But you are correct in need the earlier top seat frame because of the spring built into the frames and not the foam. I found out the hard way a few years back.

Thanks again... time to place an Ad on the local forum... maybe someone will trade a set of 1970 seat cores for a pair of 1970 RR/GTX fenders that I have...

Soft backs started in 73.
