1971 Cuda - Speaker Question

OK, maybe I should know, but what is this control supposed to do? Obviously mine is unhooked as it seems to do nothing. But, I am about to take the dash out and want to make it do whatever it should be doing. Does it simply turn a speaker(s) on / off? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
