69 4 speed paint color - 01/27/12 07:06 PM

Im working on a 69 roadrunner 4 spd car. I just had the transmission rebuilt and I'm wondering what color the 4 speed is suppose to be (black, cast iron color?, aluminum paint??) Also is the bellhousing the same color as the engine, hemi orange? Thanks for the help

The trans should be natural...unpainted. Install the bell housing before you paint the engine. Whatever paint gets on the bell housing when you paint the engine is correct. If using spray cans, you'll have to accually paint more of the bell housing though.(a spray gun will have a wider pattern)

So its natural color is cast iron right? The trans shop painted it black, so I was going to spray it cast iron color. Would that work?

Painting it cast iron gray will make it gray but wont make it correct. It should be bare cast iron. You can add a metal presrvative like ECSs RPM to keep it rust free and looking new.The bell housing was attached to the engine when the engine was painted and usually recieved a fair amount of overspray. Not typically completely covered.

Thanks Scott, thats what I was worried about is leaving it untouched and it looking 'rusty'. I'll check into that paint your referring to.

RPM isnt a paint, it is a rust preventative. If your trans is black, scuff it with a scotch brite pad and paint it cast iron grey. That will look plenty good enough for a driver. To strip that black paint off and then RPM the entire trans case would take a long time.

If you are building an O.E.M show car use the RPM, if you are building a driver....just paint it cast iron grey.

I cleaned mine, painted it with Eastwood's rust encapsulator and then painted it with Eastwood zinc phosphate which is a dark gray, natural darkened steel look that I think looks pretty good.
