HEMI BLOCK CASTING DATES???? - 10/14/08 01:51 AM

Were any blocks produced for the 1967 model year?Or did they use '66 blocks untill the '68's were poured?

No 1967 HEMI blocks were cast. I've been keeping a scorecard on casting dates for 20 years now. The latest 66 block is 10-31-66 and then they were not cast again until 4-15-68. So unless you own one of the very last 68 hemi cars it's going to have a 66 block in it. All 67 Hemi cars would have a 66 cast block. As an interesting sidenote they only cast blocks 4 times in the whole year of 1969.

So when did the 67 models go into production?Would a 10/10/66 block still be in a 66 or 67??

10/10/66 is 2 months into the 67 MODEL YEAR , you would NEVER see that casting date in a 66 model year built car ORIGINALLY .

What's stamped on the distributor pad? Should be CH426 for a '67, nothing for a '68 (this is neglecting any other stamps like WT or assembly date).

Just out of curiousity, what casting date block do you guys think would have been in a 66 satellite with a build date of july 13 1966? I have an august 65 block but i assume it is much too early.

Not all of them did, some 67 cars had leftover 65 blocks. The 67 Hemi Belvedere I had, SPD 11/22/1966, had an 8/17/1965 casting date block wich was assembled 11/16/1966. Although I've never seen one, it's also possible that a 68 car recieved a 65 dated block, there was no order to when 65 or 66's were used, they just pulled and built them at random.

As mentioned, no 67 blocks were cast.

ogopogo,
look at the stamping pad on your block, it will probably be stamped BH426 with a date under it (which is the assembly date of the engine, month and day) followed by an engine build sequence number (i.e 07 would be the 7th engine assembled that shift). If that date is before but near to your cars SPD (sometimes a day or 3 later as well due to schedule changes) you have an acceptable block, most early Street Hemi engines were assembled within a few days, to a little over a week, before being installed.

Unfortunately I cant check the pad as the engine is at FHO right now but I should have it back around xmas and maybe I'll get lucky and the assembly date will be correct for my car.thanks for the info !

What were the possible casting dates for Hemis in 1968?

Re: HEMI BLOCK CASTING DATES???? - 10/31/08 04:37 AM

Anything date cast in 1965 or 1966, then depending on the build date of the car, 68 castings, which began early in 1968 as mentioned above in another post.

You guys are right. I've got a block that's probably from an early 68 car that has the #'s on the pad MN42633601 overstamped w/ 12-16-67, but the casting date is 10-3-66. The VIN looks like 201381A8. Will post it in the lost & found forum later.

No, what I mean is in the year of 1968 what were the dates Chrysler cast the Hemi blocks?

I've got a 66 block, 10-31-66 cast date, w/ only WT on the distributor boss pad. Does that mean it goes to a 68 car? Are there any other #'s I should look for to verify this. Not trying to hijack this thread, but this info may help answer sixpacbee's question.

Re: HEMI BLOCK CASTING DATES???? - 11/02/08 12:31 AM

No, it means it COULD have gone into any 67 (with an spd after that casting date) or any early 68 (prior to the new block being cast), but never did make it into any of them.

It was probably set aside for use as an over the counter replacement part or a service/warranty replacement block and never got installed into a production line car, hence it did not ever get any assembly date or model year codes stamped into it.

Triggerfish, you've answered your own question in your previous post on your other block with the picture of the stamp on the block pan rail horn. A service block has nothing stamped there. Don't know about short blocks that had already been partially assembled.

Yes, service short block or a complete service engines would have had assembly information stamped into them somewhere (location varied with the year), obviously a bare block would not.

Thanks Roger. I've also got a 70 shortblock that I suspected is a Direct Connection block since it has no VIN or distributor pad stampings other than WT.
