planing/resurfacing leaf springs to clean then up.. - 10/13/08 02:58 PM

Has anyone cleaned up their leaf springs in regards to smoothing out the little imperfections to the surface due to slight pitting from normal weathering/corrosion? I really want to keep my springs natural without any paint.... Then I'll install all new insulators and clamps...

Thanks in advance...

You can soak them in evap-o-rust to remove the rust then sand them....but they may still have a pitted look to them. You do have to take them apart and do this one leaf at a time and it is very time consuming and messy. You can then spray some boesheild or cosmoline to keep them from rusting.

I've already have them cleaned up pretty good as far as surface rust, etc... Now it's a function of smoothing the pitting out.... If it gets too complicated, I'll just continue to clean them as much as possible and then reassemble them with all new parts...

Thanks...

I don't know how you would remove the pits without making the spring thinner and weaker. I could see that you might, MIGHT, be able to sandblast them and fill the pits with body lead but I think anything else would break out eventually. Just thoughts.

Roger..
I think you're totally correct.. I'm not going to take off any material I don't need to.. I'm going to just take the buffing wheel to the individual leafs.. They should clean up rather well and with the insulators, zinc inserts and clamps all being new, it'll look good.. Soooooo, I'm diving into unknown territory.. But, it should be fun.... I started disassembly this evening..
