906 stock heads question - 05/20/08 08:05 PM

How many CC's in a stock 906 chamber? What size are the valves? What size valves do people normally move up to if they have work done?

Also, what is the stock compression on a 1970 383hp motor for a Super Bee?

Most are around 88cc. Stock valves are 2.08/1.74. Most are upgraded to 2.14/1.81.

Re: 906 stock heads question - 05/20/08 11:11 PM

Thanks. How much does it usually run ($) to move up on valve size when its all said and done? How much more flow would you realize?

I am shooting for a solid 450-480 horse stock crank/piston 383. I'm wondering how many cfm's I can get out of these 906's (and how much it would cost to get me there). What do they typically flow stock?

From Mopar Muscle Magazine:

"Over the years, confusion and mythology arose around the 915 casting, and it mistakenly became known as the 1967 440 Magnum head. This same head was also found on all 440s in 1967--from your old man’s 440 New Yorker to the boss’s 440 Imperial. The only difference was the smaller exhaust valve in the non-Magnum engines. A throat cut and the bigger exhaust valve evened the score. For 1968, the big-block cylinder head was modified again. The new 906 head was identical in port configuration to the previous year’s 915. However, the 906 was cast with open combustion chambers (typical factory volume 88 cc). Also, the smaller 1.60-inch exhaust valve, which had been fitted in standard engines, was discontinued. The 1.74-inch exhaust valve now was used in all B/RB heads. Despite the popular misconception that the 906 head was exclusive to the 440 Magnum and the new-for-1968 383 Magnum, it was actually used across the board, with the same valve sizes in all big-block engines for 1968. From the 383 two-barrel to the 440 Magnum, the heads were unchanged. Some of this confusion can be attributed to Chrysler’s advertising of the day, in which the 383 Magnum was heralded as "coming with the 440 Magnum’s free-breathing cylinder heads." What the mavens on Madison Avenue weren’t telling was that the standard 440, the 383 2V, and all passenger car big-blocks had the same 906 heads with the same valves--although the Hi-Po Magnums came with stiffer valve springs fitted. With the exception of some industrial, heavy truck, and motorhome application castings, this one-head-fits-all philosophy was carried through the end of big-block production in 1978."

Ya gotta pick through the Krapp that get posted carefully!!!

just putting in larger valves without spending the money on at least a bowl port ads basicly NOTHING to the flow , so asdding larger valves and doing the required porting puts you into ebrock territory and they will probaly still flow less than a set of ebrocks .

all the 906's i have had CC'd were 90-92 cc .

Re: 906 stock heads question - 05/21/08 02:15 AM

And a set of stock 906's will flow what? Like 260? I should be able to get 300 cfm out of my 906's for a grand, shouldn't I???? My heads have been gasket matched and have a valve job already. My thinking is that I can spend an additional $1,000 and get close to the Eddys which would cost me $1500+. Yes, I could sell my 906's and almost make up the difference, yes the Eddys are much lighter, yes I could run a little higher compression... I know the benefits. But if the power is near the same (minus the weight savings) - for THIS car I'd like to keep the original heads. Basically, whatever a grand gets me is where I'll end up I think.

906's stock flow about 220-230 , 300 is going to cost way more than a grand , plus thats very hard to get that flow out of a 906 , they get REAL thin .

Didn't think I'd be a casualty this soon... Anyone need a factory set of 906's?

Re: 906 stock heads question - 05/21/08 03:39 AM

My 1967 383 2bbl may have had a set of 915 heads as original, not the old 516 383 heads like it should have come with - engine looked to be untouched - and when I gave the machine shop the new Mopar 1.74 valves they said they were too big for the seat. I could only guess that the line ran low/out of 516 heads that day and installed the 915's, with the smaller 1.60 exhaust. A 'throat cut' was all that was needed to have the 1.74's installed. Either that or they were installed sometime later without the original owner's knowledge - either way, a nice step up from the 516's and got the motor and trans for $100!

Re: 906 stock heads question - 05/22/08 03:33 AM

I run 906 heads on my 63 that I ported and added the 2.14 and 1.81 valves. I dont know what the flow #'s are as I never checked them. I just put them on the car and used them. I can tell you in my mild 440 I dont think stepping up to the 2.14 and 1.81 valves helped much if any. But I did it in case I use these later on a stronger engine. I cut mine .060 and the heads cc'd at 76. As for the cost of installing the larger valves I dont know as I did mine myself with my brothers valve grinding tools. I do all my own work so it dont cost me much to work my heads but if I had to pay for all the work I would buy the Stealth or Eddy's for the money. Ron
